That's right, they're all racist...

Why do they call it a "Black Box", in fact it is orange.

Is it because sometimes it could go missing for long periods of time ?

Are they trying to say because it just lays there that is it is lazy ?

How insensitive it is to point out the color of the box.

Hasn't it been through enough. Bastards...

Why not just call it a cockpit voice recorder ?

Wait, what if it is a woman pilot ?

I have always wondered.

If the pilot of the plane is a woman, is it still a cockpit.

I'm so confused...

People imagine it to be metal.
They imagine metal as black.
So a metal box would be a black one. And yes, it is easier to say "black box" than whatever the official name is, because the official name is probably three or four longwinded words.

P.S. A "cockpit" was originally the enclosed space where fighting cocks were placed to fight each other. Hence, I suppose, a enclosed space where things happen,

If it was the white box it would have special privileges and would be blamed for the racism between boxes of color.

It's a term from computing. When you are designing some bit of code or hardware, you often have a specification based only on a series of inputs, and a series of outputs. The actual purpose could be anything, an automatic ignition controller, real-time language translation, a mathematical function for encryption. But automagically, that code or hardware module does that particular task just like a magicians trick box turns eggs into chickens. Data goes in, answers come out. So they call it a "black box". That gets extended to flight recorders which take in all the inputs from the aircraft sensors, and save a recording in storage.

Probably because anytime a black boxes information is needed is because everyone on board is dead. Black is usually associated with death.

That, or racism.

Oh yea...the "black Box (s)"....that were NOT FOUND in the WTC rubble...what? The black box was seen by a cop...but the MSN buried the report. The answer to many questions lies in the missing black boxes.
Cheers

And why does cargo go on ships and you get a shipment that comes via road?

Why isn't phonetic spelt phonetically?

Why are a group of sheep called sheep and a single sheep is a sheep?

I mean... ???

Initial flight recorders did not use magnetic tape or digital memory, because it was too prone to external disruption.

Recorders, therefore, used a beam of light, hitting a vibrating mirror to write the oscillations on to a rotating drum driven by a clock like mechanism with photographic film wrapped around it.

This recorded the sound optically, was rugged, mechanically and electronically simple (fewer points of failure), was easily reloaded and cheap.

Of course, the film handling and optical sealing was important and so the boxes were usually opened only in a darkroom.
