What is CRISPR?

What is CRISPR

CRISPR is an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat. This name refers to the unique organization of short, partially palindromic repeated DNA sequences found in the genomes of bacteria and other microorganisms. While seemingly innocuous, CRISPR sequences are a crucial component of the immune systems [3] of these simple life forms. The immune system is responsible for protecting an organism’s health and well-being. Just like us, bacterial cells can be invaded by viruses, which are small, infectious agents. If a viral infection threatens a bacterial cell, the CRISPR immune system can thwart the attack by destroying the genome of the invading virus [4]. The genome of the virus includes genetic material that is necessary for the virus to continue replicating. Thus, by destroying the viral genome, the CRISPR immune system protects bacteria from ongoing viral infection.

CRISPR is being used across multiple disciplines for targeted gene editing. CRISPR essentially does away with the "shotgun" method of genetically modified organisms. Since no virus or bacterial DNA is introduced to the GMO to complete the process, such genetically modified foods do not require onerous labeling, nor is it subject to the same ridiculous and unscientific criticisms GMOs get now from people who don't understand science.

CRISPR is being used to attack HIV and it has made some serious progress in gene therapy with regard to other diseases as well.

HIV Genes Have Been Cut Out of Live Animals Using CRISPR

CRISPR allows on the spot gene therapy. With perfected methods and better technology this is but a precursor of things to come.

it is not necessary to include slights in your posts towards anyone who would disagree with you, in fact it makes you appear quite petty. just cause someone wishes GMO foods carry a label does not make them ignorant to science.

plenty has been posted about crispr to these forums numerous times past, search is your friend

Yes it is. GMO labelling is nothing more than an attempt by profiteers to corner markets based on scientific ignorance of the population.

Don't care.

Alert it to the mods and they'll close it as they see fit.

GMO labeling is about informing consumers as to what goes into the production of the products they may choose to purchase, being against labeling is only for the interest of tricking those who would rather not purchase GMO foods into purchasing them anyway, freedom of choice doesnt mean anything when the information you need to make that choice is withheld from you, your wish that freedom of choice be revoked from anyone whom disagrees with your opinion is authoritarian.
if someone would choose to avoid GMO foods it is wrong of you to want them to be tricked into consuming them anyhow, there is no reason to be against labeling, if you think labeling is bad due to ignorance then you should focus on educating those whom are ignorant, rather then corralling them like cattle by force into the decision you want to make for them....
this huge advertising push against GMO labeling is nothing more than an attempt by profiteers to corner markets based on encouraging ignorance

you dont care that you have reposted a topic? it is against terms and conditions though, so you dont care that you violate the terms and conditions of this site? you just wantonly disobey the rules they asked you to agree to when you signed up for this site under the premise they can clean up after you once you've done it? how rude and inconsiderate of you.

Except there is not scientific basis for it. None.

There have been THOUSANDS of studies, independent and across the globe, that have proven GMOs safe for decades now.

you do not need to have "scientific basis" for your every decision in life, likewise it should not be necessary to have scientific basis just to have the freedom of choice to opt out of a program.

if someone wants to avoid GMO foods though they have no scientific reasons for it they should have the free right to do so, it is wrong for you to force things upon people just because you dont think they have a good enough reason, what ever happened to the concept of freedom more and more its usurped by people like you who prefer authoritarianism, to force the world to live the way you want them too.

did you ever think people might have other reasons beyond science to avoid GMO's, like religion, or just personal preference, it used to be one was not required to explain their reasons at all their choices were respected without a presented reason entirely, but now we have people like you in the world who seem to think the ignorant people of the world need to be forced to live life the way the smarter enlightened people insist they ought to.

if someone wishes to avoid GMO's though you may disagree with their decision you ought to respect their right to make such a decision or else you are not pro freedom.

pro or anti labeling of gmos has nothing to do with the safety of gmo's. it is only about the freedom or lack of to choose as you wish.

Yeah. Forget facts.

If someone wants to make sound decisions it would be best to not muddy the waters with pseudoscience. It is from science that we gather facts and fit them together to complete the ever growing puzzle. Those facts help us make choices every single day.

If policy isn't based on science and facts the the policy can only do a disservice to the people.
