So the Washington Redskins are being sued by the Federal Government, I believe, as everyone should know probably. So the Washington Time's, being the intrepid journalists that they are, finally polled Native Americans on whether they are offended by the name/logo.
The results find that only 8% of Native Americans polled found the name offensive. In fact, nearly twice that number of Caucasians found the name offensive!

The attorney's of the Washington Redskins are using this poll as proof that the lawsuit is illegitimate, while the prosecutor says that these results don't matter.

But Suzan Harjo, the lead plaintiff in the first case challenging the team’s trademark protections, dismissed The Post’s findings.

“I just reject the results,” said Harjo, 70, who belongs to the Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee tribes. “I don’t agree with them, and I don’t agree that this is a valid way of surveying public opinion in Indian Country.”

Here is the article for your fine gentlemen and ladies to enjoy, pick apart and subject it to the usual ATS treatment

Enjoy

Your link to the article seems to not be working.

Without any way to verify the authenticity of this, i'm just going to say that I call BS on the "7 out of 10 native americans didn't feel the term "Redskins" was disrespectful." I'm a card-carrying member of the Chinook tribe, and have spent plenty of time around Native americans, mainly in the northwest. "Redskin" might not have the same impact as the top slurs for African Americans, but I can't imagine any native would tolerate being referred to as "redskin" without being at least annoyed. It might not be the worst thing you can call a native american, but it's certainly disrespectful.

I apologize I can't get the link to work and don't have time to play with it more. If you want to find the article you will have to go the the Washington times website and search " Washington Redskins " and it's like the fourth article down.

Again I apologize.

the rest of the PC crowd should take after this - I subscribe to the belief that 50% or more of the people who are getting "offended" by things, are only doing so because they saw someone else get offended and now they see a reason to complain

I'm sure many Native Americans are excited to be acknowledged at all after the genocide that was perpetrated against them by European Americans which incidentally dwarfs the "holocaust" that we all seem so concerned with.

I guess since they're not "White" it's no big deal that they were nearly exterminated in their own homeland.

I still feel bad about that even though I know zero Native Americans personally.

no its not ,its a victim mentality your buying into, i cant speak on a stupid survey because surveys are flawed and biased but if a team name really bothers you start looking at real native issues not fing football.

Try this, go to any rez and start calling the indigenous people there "redskins" and see what happens.

or perhaps go into a bar in Howard Beach, Queens and start throwing the word "wop" around...

or go to McAllen, Texas and call the residents there "beaners"

Personally, being a good % Choctaw, I do not find the name offensive . To me it points out brave, tough men who are out to WIN! Be they Caucasian, brown (and I mean "black"), Hispanic, and/or whomever are ready to WIN when they're on a TEAM! How and why is that so hard to understand? I thought that America was basically a huge NATION of TEAM MEMBERS!? If this isn't the case...well, hell, guess I might as well move, because I do believe in a HUGE team membership when it comes to my country.

I'm part of a tribe and many (mostly younger) people on the rancheria wear Redskins ballcaps, and would probably laugh at you if you showed up and said "Hey redskin" just to make a political point.

I am offended that they are offended and I raise them a dash of faux outrage.

I am also offended by this poll that is clearly BS.

Yea you know I should be the poster child for social justice and racism claims, but all I've ever found to be true is that the true racists are liberals. I am a proven card carrying American Indian, and do you know what I say to these idiots? # you and the horse you rode in on, go cry some more bitches!

And I am an atheist, and I lean more right wing # anyone who doesn't like it.

Here's your song, and btw redskins I hate you only because I'm a Dallas fan but Rock and roll with your name..

Yea, because disrespect is the line people draw in the sand to advocate violence.

"You called me beaner, I am now allowed to stab you repeatedly and I am justified in my actions since I was disrespected"

Btw, I am Hispanic, so I didn't use the term "beaner" in any derogatory way, since, you know, it's my culture taking back and appropriating the derogatory term used to disrespect my heritage.

Lots of people can trace their blood back to a tribe, I mean they were here when we got here. He might qualify for the IHS and that is about it.
