Somehow I don't think the latest (horrible) incarnation of Beauty and the Beast will come to pass.

If you cannot see the problem yourself, then there is nothing I can tell you. I'm done here, stated an opinion, explained it and have things IRL to do. Good luck with your mutations!

What semantics? You just wanted a circle jerk? Sorry, I have a knack for invading safe spaces.

Creating life, chimeras and clones is no big deal compared to trying to find someone who will take personal resposnibility for their creation's welfare and future.

edit on 19-5-2016 by Whatsthisthen because: clarity, wording was a little awkward.

Replace the word God with "we know what we are doing completely" then. Clearer now? All the attempts at cloning, splicing and who knows what else have failed. Dolly the sheep, for example. Are you really trying to tell me we understand enough about the complexities of genetics that we can just start bending it to our will and desires? I hope not...

No. But we will.

And until we can, I don't think we will have a whole lot more understanding into consciousness. A good example would be, "If you create human life, does it have awareness?"

"Can you grow a complete, adult human that is able to be conscious?"

Could you imagine the implications of being able to make an otherwise viable, healthy adult human in a lab, only to have it fail to animate with consciousness? For it to lie as a vegetable on a table, unmoving and unaware of its own existence?

At that point, I suspect all we have done is create a human in the most base sense of the word. A homo. There is no sapiens, let alone sapiens about sapiens. So have we really created "one of us"?

BUt we can't even begin to talk about tat kind of stuff until we get the "you're playing God" folks addressed.

I don't think we are remotely close to X-Men. I think genes have to be incredibly similar to another for any of this to work. Two percent genetic difference turns out to be massive... venomous humans seems pretty impossible.

It would as a hybrid. As a chimera, it's called "Tuesday".

How are you reaching these conclusions?

If they do make a hybrid, I figure till be like most planet hybrids if it breeds (if it could even do so) its hybrid traits wouldn't pass on. It would be come one or other. But we haven't done a human hybrid so can't say 100% that the traits wouldn't be passed on or not.

From the [url=http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/05/18/478212837/in-search-for-cures-scientists-create-embryos-that-are-both-animal-and-human]link[/ url] in the OP.

Perhaps the boldest hope is to create farm animals that have human organs that could be transplanted into terminally ill patients.

I think this is as far as it will go, farm animals that grow human organs.
Keep thinking that.

I understand that a chimaera is made by taking two embryonic cells and getting them to grow together at the same time kinda like conjoined twins. Two separate sets of dna growing alongside each other. Kinda like a tree graff where you take say a apricot tree and graft it to the trunk of a walnut tree or something.

Somehow im picturing human chimaeras to be more like a monsanto type of critter where the human has say augmented immune system or blood clotting mechanisms. At least that's what I hope they are trying to do.

Bedlam are you saying its closer to what monsanto does with genetically modified corn. Or is it more like human with 8 octopus tentacles for arms and an m60 in each?

Almost sounds like "nightmare hall" from the "dulce papers" was accurate.

Wonder if the govt has ever seen the movie Prometheus. And if so were they paying attention to the potential pitfalls of this endeavor? Why are we honestly trying our attempt at creating a real life xenomorph

Are we making animal human hybrids though? It doesn't seem likely that we will be. What qualifies as a hybrid?
They already are making them. This is only what they are letting the public know about. An introduction, so to speak.

What if human/animal chimeras grow and rise in our population, and decide to turn against normal humans? There have been wars for far lesser reasons.

This has all the potential of going south real quick.

Sounds better than the status quo & slavery to white collar society and money. Bring on the hybrids! I wants me a half-smurf girlfriend.

I'm not the only one. Others here are aware as well. There are many things you aren't privy to, obviously. You need to stick to social issues. That seems to be your forte.

Reminds me of the story of The Island Of Dr. Moreau and that didn't turn out so well.

Ever read The Island of Dr. Moreau? That's what this reminds me of, only it's not done by vivisection, like it was in the book.
