Dear ATS,

Hi!

Something has been bothering me and I am a noob about these things.

My brother calls me from the US and sometimes his number shows up with Russia underneath it.

Other times it shows where he actually is. lol.

I took a screen grab but am hesitant to post it coz his number can be seen.

I have an iphone 6 and he calls from his land line so you iphone people would know what it would look like, I guess.

What's up wit dat schnit?

Is he hacked or something? Is my little bro using proxy's?

Go to paint(if you're on PC) and just scratch his number away. It is odd. Likely some sort of glitch.

Seems he occasionally rings you 'From Russia with Love". One must be careful these days as American and Western Governments see Russia as the new enemy and a country to be destroyed next if you listen to our hate politicians.
Sorry I can't help but I expect there are a lot of experts on here who can.

I've never ever seen a phone show the number calling me from a different locale. If it shows he's calling you from Russia, is should be a Russian number calling you.

By chance have you clicked on links from strange text messages? If so, your phone is hacked, and maybe that is why.

Really? Never seen that? Ok, I never thought it was that odd until I saw Russia. It's usually when the call is out of country.

I'm not sure if I been hacked but my brother was, through his laptop he just bought.

What's the point of hacking a nobody, anyway?

I occasionally spoof phone calls to screw with people. It's pretty straightforward.

Do you have a bank account? If so you're not a nobody to a hacker.

Because Russia is the evil empire (insert ominous musical overtones). It doesn't read out from any other country? Theres your sign.

Maybe he just uses one of the providers that lets you use any name for caller id. My friend Greg called me once, and it showed up under the name 'King Phatboy' . Maybe he used the name Russia.

Tell your brother to stay off those Russian bride websites.

It's probably just a glitch on your Iphones side, and the software it's using to determine where a call is from. Phone calls themselves are still very primitive and are usually analog in nature. If it's just normal phone calls (not Skype or a Voip service) then my bet is on a software glitch on your Iphones side. Nothing to get all tinfoil hat over

You ask what the point would be, of hacking a nobody.

I would say that depends largely on the extent of the hack. Some intrusions plant viruses in ones computer, which turn that computer into a slave to whomever wrote the virus, or whomever owns that particular virus.

If the hacker responsible for the intrusion has control of more than one computer by this method, that hacker can use those machines in unison to perform DDoS attacks and all that sort of malarkey. Either that, or they can take data from that machine, like any bank account information, and identity information, which might pass through it. These things can be useful for criminals seeking to impersonate someone in order to commit an offence without revealing their true identity.

Hahahaha! He got a ransomware last year from a low rent smut site.

Said Obama was was pointing at him. Scared him so, that he closed the laptop and put it in the closet for a couple days.

Hey, maybe that's the problem?

They nailed his IP?

Maybe tell your boet to be a bit more careful with how he internets; the programs he uses to protect his machine, for starters, and then the sites he frequents, or rather, the types of sites... There are good sites and bad sites no matter your kink, er, interests

Not sure about the actual issue with the phone. Could be hacked.. is it for sure a legit iPhone?

Maybe related; was chatting with an older dude today, don't want to give too much info, but he mentioned that he was 'busted' by local intelligence for 'hacking'. They realized he was goofing around and just warned him about his actions. Anyways what he said was that all traffic, even to this day, goes through Washington DC, even if it's not the whole packet of chips, it leaves a trail of crumbs... which was pretty much how he was found out.
Okay, maybe not so related, but anyway..

Maybe it's possible that your brothers phone's info could be scrambling on route to satellites and servers?
