S.C.R.9:

This resolution declares that pornography is "a public health hazard leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts and societal harms."

I fear that Utah is causing more harm than good.

In 2009, Harvard Business School study found that residents of Utah were the highest per capita purchasers of online adult entertainment in the United States.
It is an overwhelmingly religious state and the attitude toward pornography, seems to have caused it to be the the state that watches the most.

State Sen. Todd Weiler, chief sponsor of of the legislation, said, "Pornography today is like tobacco was 70 years ago," comparing the addictive effects.
I don't even know what that means. I have read that there is a condition called 'pornography addiction' but is he comparing the 2 because people did not know tobacco was addictive 70 years ago? It doesn't make any sense. Cigarettes can kill you, pornography cannot.

Here is a link to the resolution: link I find most odd the part that says pornography "lessens the desire in young men to marry."

WHEREAS, this biological addiction leads to increasing themes of risky sexual behaviors, extreme degradation, violence, and child sexual abuse images and child pornography

Yes, they are saying that viewing legal, adult pornography will lead to the desire to view child pornography. That is just insane.

This is government at work.

The Utah Coalition Against Pornography hailed the move on its Facebook page Monday. It encourages people to head to the Capitol and "celebrate and recognize this historic moment!"

They sure know how to have fun in Utah! I just wonder if they know what year it is, though.

Some academic sources inside the wiki story....

Effects of pornography

Coin toss.

You know, Utah is going to take grief over this from people calling it puritanical and blaming religion for it, but there seems to be a growing trend towards censorship in even unreligious countries around the world. Look at Japan's banning of even showing pubic hair, the UK's recent law change classifying many, many fetishes as obscene and outlawing possession of them, and Iceland banned porn entirely... It's a really bizarre game the authoritarians are playing at.

Ya, the wiki mainly says all studies are inconclusive on whether this is good or bad.

That is what sort of worried me. A resolution does nothing, but it may lead to laws later.

"That which is denied gains power, and seeks strange and unexpected forms of manifestation." Peter Carroll
Utah is now confirmation of the above quote in real time.

Pornography is a health hazard? So is everything else that people enjoy doing on a regular basis. My granddaughter loves rocks. She can't stop picking them up and admiring them. Does she need a shrink? Anything can become an addiction, but OMG! porn! Shut down the world until we get this fixed!

So what are they going to do block all of the internet from Utah? Well if he get his way I guess they'll need a researcher, pretty sure it won't be a short list of people qualified for that position. I also figure that already over 50% income tax will get even higher or maybe they'll finally start charging property tax as well.

Obviously porn 'can' be a health hazard as addiction to porn has risen with the advent of the internet, but it isn't Government's job to keep us safe or at least it shouldn't be. I certainly don't want them involved in my auto-erotic activities.

Can you imagine Hilary's face popping up during the money shots screaming at you?

Cigarettes can kill you, pornography cannot.

Only in the USA. Up until the 70's they always showed "married couples bedrooms" in the media as consisting of 2 single beds.

Isn't Utah run by the Mormons...hmmm...
They have sex in "robes"

What better way to create a whole new interventionist industry by to calling it a "public health hazard"
Children always are attracted to what you tell then they can't have.

Cigarettes kill you slowly,
while some forms of sex can kill you rapidly

I agree with you. Like here in Califorina we have some crazy laws.

California prison workers will no longer be allowed to have sex with inmates.

Film producers must have permission from a pediatrician before filming a child under the age of one month!

This one is the craziest! Animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship.

You just fixed the porn "problem" for the whole country. Anyone reading that statement will need counseling, and will never be the same EVER again.

You've ended porn.

While running the risk of public indecency arrests, I can think of an EXCELLENT counter-protest on (all over) the steps of Utah's capitol temple - I mean building.

Let's just hope they don't read Metallicus' post and start putting up billboards. Talk about a public health hazard! If everyone read that post, human reproduction would cease and we'd become extinct!
