There is no other logical explanation other than they're hiding something... Perhaps the TRUTH?

The case was cut and dry, at least according to them. What's left to hide?

I agree. It seems that if this case is allowed to proceed, by way of the discovery process the cat will be let out of the proverbial bag. The entire scam will be revealed.
