Hmm..I live in a so called hot zone...several of my students and co-workers have caught the Zika and Chikingunya virus over the past year or so. They describe flu like symptoms and sore joints over a couple of days...not so scary imo.

I think the impact stems from not necessarily feeling ill but what it can do to a baby in the womb if a mom contracts this virus...in a twisted way maybe this will make people think twice about having children for a short period of time...I would like to see what the birthing numbers look like in a year as compared to several years ago...

Compare the USA to the population In the world already touched by this virus...

Nothing to worry about... Move along folks...

Just look at all the Ebola threads here and the doom porn that was written by so many people who thought they knew better!

More people die from influenza in your neck of the woods yearly.

Kindest respects

Why do I get this feeling that another inoculation is coming our way ? Maybe the WHO ?(there is a reason for that acronym) . Another Flu type scare for another ponzi scheme coming down ? How may of these have we had since 2000? How many avian ,swine , dog , cat , rabbit , amoeba flu related , ebola , flesh-eating , smallpox, measles virus outbreaks can we endure ? Oh , forgot West Nile.

I hope this is not a case of the "boy who cried wolf" . That we keep hearing this type of diarrhea of the mouth over and over from the WHO until we are so numb to it.......

/sigh... I would rather we each just be forced to pay $100/year to Big Pharma in "protection money" than have them go through the trouble of whipping up real or imagined diseases to protect us from. Just go ahead and say it, "Everyone has to give us X amount of money, or we're going to create diseases or rumors of diseases to shake you down for money." It would be much more honest, and safer than the way they go about it now.

I also think any vaccine for which the maker is protected from liability should profit only the citizenry. If it's important enough to shield the makers from liability, then it should be nationalized and not for profit. My guess is this will go the way of SARS, MERS, H1N1, etc., but not until someone has pocketed a bunch of cash one way or another.

The article is about adults and the Zika virus. Not fetuses, that is already generally known.

No. Many Catholics already use birth control, against the 'rules' or not.

It's not doom porn. A lot of the reassessment already comes from effects in previous large outbreaks in other countries. Yes, now more people die of the flu. Did you read the article?

They are both working on a vaccine and determining how to make these particular mosquitoes die faster, as it takes until about the 1/2 way point of their life cycle to to be able to transmit the virus.

Hi Reldra.

I understand and respect what you are saying.

Maybe my wording "Doom Porn" was a little too strong.

The point I was trying to put across is that so much palava was created about Ebola in the united states (which in my opinion was just doom porn when you read all the threads that were created about it here in ATS and also the hype created by the media in general) that I feel that the Zika issue is going the same way.

I did read the article yes and here is a snippet that caught my eye :

So far there have been at least 346 cases of the virus in the continental United States, according to the CDC. Most of these among travelers returning from currently affected countries and territories. There are no reported cases of mosquito transmitted Zika infection at this time.

Apart from those who have been potentially infected after returning home from travelling taking precautionary steps so as not to "possibly" infect anyone else, I really think that this virus is less life threatening to the general population of the United states compared to the yearly influenza virus(es) that have a much larger death toll.

To this date only 3 deaths have been reported that may be due to complications caused by the Zika virus.

Good info can be found here : www.who.int...

and here : www.paho.org...:2015-preguntas-frecuentes-virus-fiebre-zika&Itemid=41711&lang=en

Kindest respects
