I think that it is better to think of it this way:

Mathematically, it is improbable that we are the only life in the universe, the only intelligent life in the universe, or even in the galaxy. It is possible that we have been visited, it is possible that a great many things have happened without the general public being aware of them.

However, we lack data to firmly support either a yes or a no answer, when asked the question; have we been visited. We simply do not, cannot know for certain. Because there are governments whose actions we know to be against the interests of the people of Earth, we cannot trust their position, any more than we can trust on face value the word of any Tom, Dick, or Harry who claims to have met something from another world, or seen craft which cannot be explained by even the most modern and secretive airframes ever developed.

All we can do, is watch and wait for data we can rely on either way.
