SEOUL, April 7 (UPI) -- At least two suspects who attempted to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were arrested, according to unconfirmed reports in the country.

The suspects had been reportedly arrested at the China border near the Tumen River as they were preparing a hit on Kim in the city of Hoeryong in North Hamgyong Province, Radio Free Asia reported Thursday.

A source in the North who spoke to Japanese news service Asia Press on the condition of anonymity said he had heard the "terrorists" had not yet crossed the Tumen, which separates North Korea from China, when North Korean border guards crossed the border to arrest them.

The source went on to say the suspects were transferred to the State Security Department, and that the border guards were given rewards – including a chance to become members of the Korean Workers' Party.

Japanese media still thinks this is a hoax / rumor started by the N. Korean government. Since they were supposedly caught on the Chinese side I dont see how they could start a rumor and have China go along with it.


ETA: This is the only source I have found reporting this. There is nothing in Chinese media, N. Korean or S. Korean media.

Japanese journalist Jiro Ishimaru, founder of Asia Press, said it is likely a rumor that was manufactured by the state to bolster support for the party ahead of its Seventh Congress in May.

Bummer! I was going to make all kinds of Seth Rogen and James Franco jokes...

What better way to get sympathy from the world? You are not paranoid if they are really out to get you, or so the saying goes. An NPR article warned there might be "sensational" stories leading up to the Worker Party in May. Seems they were not far off.

If there is any validation to this. Then it's my hunch for Kim to use this as more propaganda. allowing him the right to arm those rockets/missiles with nukes. Could be fishing for justification to do such a thing.

Kim really is hell bent on attacking those in the region whom he disagrees with.

Thats just it... I doubt, if he is assassinated, people / countries would care and I think that would included Russia and China. While lil kimmy is doing his sharks and jets routine, its causing a response that China does not want. The more looney tunes kim jong un fatso becomes the more the US, Japan and S. Korea will ramp things up on their side.

Will China / Russia go to war to protect a nation thats threatening the use of nukes?

While looking for additional sources I came across media reports of assassination attempts / plans going back to almost when Un took over. I was watching a documentary on the North and they talked about one attempt in the Capital. Do you guys remember when we saw reports of Pyongyang being locked down a year or so ago with reports of gunfire?

That supposedly was a coup attempt by members of an elite military unit assigned to Pyongyang. According to the info the unit was pretty much wiped out, regardless if they participated or not.

China is finding it harder and harder, like Russia earlier this year proved, to support these shenanigans. I wonder how much they will put up with before they reprimand him? Can they even do so without causing a major incident? IDK.

But the amount of stories coming out over the years makes me wonder: KJU died in a car crash; KJU has a dead ringer look alike; KJU killed his porn star lover (she then shows up and gives a speech praising Glorious Leader then disappears again); KJU killed his aunt (no, she is in a vegetative state in hospital)... Hey! Kim Jong-un STOP THE INSANITY!!

Why would border guards be sent into Chinese territory to get them?

Kim Jong has to be feeling really paranoid right about now. Failed Coups, Failed Rockets, China and the U.S. after him, a 3.8 inch pecker, a half-blind barber...and now, his own military making jokes about Kim and his family.
