Um, they already hinted at it.

Smithers marries Lisa. It is a sham marriage designed to help both of them become political climbers. Smithers ruthlessly aids Lisa in becoming a very popular president. All the while, he suppresses his true self and coldly cleans up all of Lisa's political messes, including her many affairs, some of them not-so-consensual. There are even hints that Smithers uses ... lethal means.

And years later, after standing by his woman, denying his true nature, when Smithers finally stands up to collect his due from the party, he is shoved aside by an Apu candidacy as the historic first Indian American.

And then, after it all, Smithers is FINALLY ready and all his scandals start to hang out and along comes Trump, but is the world finally ready for the first gay candidate?
