Actually, there have been many studies on prayers, and in one of the most comprehensive studies it turns out that if a person knows you're praying for them, it can actually be harmful, interestingly enough.

Also, considering that some gods actively place people in hell and call upon their followers to stone, hange, throw off cliffs, or other forms of exicutions, to execute people whom pray to false idols, then it could very well mean that praying to the wrong idol could mean an eternity of suffering and agony.

In both senses, praying seems rather dangerous
