It is really hard to make this stuff up. I get it, I do.. these things can break the bank. The average female will spend roughly 1800.00-2200.00 in their lifetime on these items.

Here is my question. Where do we/they draw the line?

toilet paper
tissue
paper towels
depends
colostomy bags
hand urinals
diapers
88 jelly
prophylactics
birth control
etc.

I guess for the females in Chicago, this is a really good thing. Curious, how much time and money the City Council spent in order to pass this new waiver?

Tampons and sanitary napkins are now characterized as medical necessities to be exempted.

The tax on the feminine products has become a national issue, with at least seven states now considering legislation. Also, five women in New York recently filed a lawsuit arguing that the tax is unconstitutional.

In Illinois, lawmakers recently advanced a measure to exempt feminine hygiene and incontinence products from the state sales tax.

I heard an article on bbc about how in India woman can't afford to buy pads or tampons and how whole families will share the same pad when bleeding. Sometimes they make their pads out if paper or moss or what ever they can find. Woman and young girls are dying of tetanus because of this. They are also taking out girls uterus to deal with the problem. They can't afford to buy cotton to make pads. Woman are made to feel shame and hide because of this natural bleeding. Woman can't cook or go to temples or lots of other things that woman can do are not aloud whole bleeding.
IT'S A BLOODY SHAME.

IDK ? I think your estimate of 1,800 to 2,400 in a lifetime for feminine products is low. I come up with a much higher amount...more like 4,800 and add another 120 a year for daughters while they are minors living under your roof. It is a health hazard to not change tampons frequently and can cause "toxic shock syndrome" or other problems.

I just did a quick calculation and I got around 6000$ a life time of buying tampons just for me alone that's not including my to young daughters.

Ah, it's only the additional city of Chicago sales tax. If we could exempt tampons from ALL sales tax, it would save me nearly $5/year! We shop at a Costco in the suburbs, so the cost is about half that of the cost at WalMart, and the tax rate is around 8%, I believe.

If people in the city are spending double what I am (for my wife's tampons), and using about the same quantity annually, they will be saving approximately $1.50/year. That's enough for a small order of French Fries...every single year!

You either aren't aware of menopause, and have a life expectancy of around 100-120, or you need to discover Costco! (sorry, that's two Costco plugs now - I swear I'm not an employee nor a stockholder, just a guy who feels the pain of people who drastically overpay for basics!)

Ops yes I did forget menopause my stupid brain, or must be because I'm bleeding right now. Ok recalculate 3600$ . Not to mention having to buy more underwear as my underwear is stained with blood as I can't afford to buy enough tampons or pads. Do guys gets jock itch stains on their undies.

Lol...Too much information.
But, of course, menstruation is a beautiful miracle of nature.

I could give lots more info if you want more. Like girls are getting their menstrual cycle younger these days. Could it be all the hormones they pump into farmed animals or the fact that a lot of tap water we drink is made from recycled water, I know you can remove the pee and poo from water but how about the hormones from contraception pill and other drugs that people consume. Not to mention all the herbicides and pesticides used to grow food.

That's a really good question.
Definitely the hormones in farmed animals have contributed to young girls developing earlier.

I calculated for 40 years at $10 a month, that cost may vary, but I think $10 is a good average for most women. I'm not sure that this tax exemption really does anything to significantly cut costs and I do see the OP's point...why are tampons any different then any other health or sanitary product ?

Yeah...I hear ya.....I would rather see tax breaks for companies that make tampons with bio-degradable applicators.

Don't forget to factor in the average number of pregnancies a woman has over those 40 years and subtract 9 months, per.
