www.cnbc.com...

A powerful and shallow earthquake of magnitude 8.1 struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicentre was 808 km (502 miles) southwest of Padang, USGS said. It was 10 km (six miles) deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties but the shallower a quake, the more likely it is to cause damage. USGS originally put the magnitude at 8.2.

seems pretty shallow and powerful... Tsunami building? :/ prayers for Indo

The 2004 quake was 10 times stronger, but this is still bad. I guess it being so shallow also means it could pack some water damage with it?

Hopefully it wont be too bad for them.

The report I'm seeing is saying 7.9 not an 8.0. But still pretty bad we don't get very many in the 7.9 range.

M7.9

We only ever really see about 10 to 18 quakes in the 7.0 to 7.9 range. It was at least not dead center in a city area, but we won't know if we have an all clear till the tsunami warning is dropped.

luckily there aren't any cities located close-by. Still no report on possible tsunami but most likely there will a tsunami generated from such strong shallow quake, keep an eye out there folks and stay safe!

Indonesian officials say a powerful, shallow earthquake has hit off the western coast of Sumatra and warn it could trigger a tsunami

Seems like this happed in about the same area that the 9.1 of 2004 triggered the tsunami which devastated Thailand. Hopefully IF there is a tsunami, it won't affect highly populated areas. This did just happen, about an hour ago...so news will be flowing all day on this. No pun intended.

If you click on the view event details you can see a better plot in near real time.

Seems when the EQ happened there was a 60cm rise in height for the buoy

I'm not qualified to say what a 60cm rise means in terms of potential tsunami creation though

The quake was 10 kilometers deep? What matters as far as tsunami generation is whether there was any sudden displacement of the sea floor.

Even a small quake can generate sufficient displacement to cause upheaval or slides and generate waves.

I hope they all had their radios on…
