WASHINGTON — President Obama will propose a $10-a-barrel oil tax to fund an ambitious new transportation spending plan, White House officials said Thursday. But no sooner had the White House proposed the plan than Republicans in Congress shot it down.

The new oil tax would be phased in over five years, and would apply to both domestic and imported oil. It's different from a gas tax in that it will be paid for by the oil companies, not directly by consumers, and would also apply to jet and train fuel

Obama to propose $10-a-barrel oil tax

Apparently low oil prices aren't sitting well with Obama. He want's to increase taxes on oil by $10 per barrel. One has to wonder what failed green companies he wants to waste tax money on now. Obama claims it's a per barrel fee that the oil companies will pay. But as everyone knows, taxes are always passed on to the consumer. So not only will gas prices rise at the pump, plane tickets and train freight will rise as well.

The republicans in congress already shot it down, but there's no telling how far Obama will be willing to go to see this through.

When American industry is down, that's when you kick it hard. Especially when it makes consumers hurt too.

God forbid he would allow low energy prices to encourage manufacturing.

Progressive strategy 101.

With the job he did on coal this will surely not go well
for him. Good thread!
I wonder where else he can blow a money hole in something
while blaming somebody else? I think he's running out of
infrastructure and other programs to destroy. Please Congress,
do your gridlock thing until this demon is gone.

What part of - The President has no power to impose new taxes - does he not understand?

That is the power of taxation lies solely in the House of Representatives.

I think he missed the memo. Obama likes to think he has omnipotence.

Oh, you mean like that Stimulus bill they passed early in his first term that was supposed to fix all that infrastructure and go to shovel ready jobs?

And when oil was $100 a gallon I was paying near $3.50 a gallon. As was most the United States... if not more. Now I'm paying $1.50 per gallon. So no, another tax on barrels of oil doesn't sit well; Especially when it's going to be used on garbage green projects that are destined to fail and line the pockets of even more garbage.

I bet this is like his own hidden gofundme thing, and if he could pass this tax, 2% will go to maybe fix roads, and 98% will go to new expanded administrator jobs at the Dept. of Energy that he quietly gives to fellow politicians and friends who don't survive politically after the next elections take place. To pay back all those rubber stamps he's been getting.

That's because of the taxes you are already paying on gas.

However, by taxing it at the barrel, you are talking about impacting the price of every petroleum product. So look around at everything you see that's made of plastic, all your gasoline, pitch for the roof, asphalt and road oil (making those infrastructure projects more expensive), your lubricants, fuel oils, jet fuel (but with the TSA, no one needs to fly), etc., all of that will get more expensive.

Ya, you see people complain about BS. Especially when it gets shovelled on them nonstop by the same guy.

Well of course green lines pockets when the government decides it will punish oil and subsidize green to attempt to make green competitive in the market.

Lots of easy money there. See Solyndra.

You forgot pharmaceutical products, many medicines are made with oil products.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it wasn't for the fact that every green project Obama has insisted upon has been an utter failure.

Obama clean energy loans leave taxpayers in $2.2 billion hole

Invest in Lockheed Martin's fusion reactor. Or invest in nuclear power plants. But I can only see Obama lining the pockets of more "companies" like Solyndra and other's he's blown our tax money on.

Then an increase in gasoline tax.

Get ready for $9.00 a gallon when oil rises.

What part of the national budget process don't you understand? The president makes a proposal to the congress, it's introduced by a member of the president's party and the House considers it.

How much more clear did the OP have to be?

Obama to propose $10-a-barrel oil tax

resident Obama will propose a $10-a-barrel oil tax to fund an ambitious new transportation spending plan...

Maybe you're just being intentionally ignorant.

Conservatives act like Obama is a king and treat him like some sort of demi-God with a pen and phone...but then, nothing happens. Nothing changes. No one's life is directly impacted by these stories and yet...Obama is some sort of tyrant.

Considering the things he has done or attempted to do with EOs ... yes, we worry that he will try it if he wants it badly enough.

He's been pretty clear since the start that energy will necessarily skyrocket, and that he considers $5/gal gas to be an appropriate price.
