The Super 18 Rugby Final is on in town tonight, the Lions from South Africa are going to love the temperatures, -2C with the wind chill, recommended 4 layers of clothes and one windproof layer
they will be running around the field in shorts

I was looking at the data surge of Kumamoto that started on the 25th July again, and making a more decompressed Timeline graph
graph 1
The graph seems to show waves up and down highs and lows. I wondered if it was related to Tides?
So I found the Tide chart for Kumamoto, fitted the times into the graph and then split the graph by colours to "Incoming" and "Outgoing" periods
graph 2 tides
I can't really see that it matches,
with the Incoming Tide periods (25)
3 are increasing in magnitude
5 are going down in size
9 have the largest quake in the middle i.e. it went up, then down again, during the outgoing tide period
8 have a dip in the middle i.e, the largest quakes in the priod are at the start and finish of the outgoing tide period

with the Outgoing Tide periods (25)
5 are increasing in magnitude
5 are going down in size
8 have the largest quake in the middle i.e. it went up, then down again, during the outgoing tide period
7 have a dip in the middle i.e, the largest quakes in the priod are at the start and finish of the outgoing tide period

If it was related to tides I was expecting that it might be consistant during the time period.
Looks like its just random
like most earthquakes are

Off Topic, but just a note.
My japanearthquakes blog uses Picasa to store the pie graph images on the flipcard start page.
Picasa recently was taken over by google and as per google's usual procedure they have completely wrecked it, just like Google Classic Maps
Now Picasa is called Google Photos
I was just figuring out how it works, and accidentally deleted the entire japanearthquakes album
Sorry about this
I had over the last year or so loaded over 1000 pie graphs
I still have them on file on my computer, but to be honest I really can't be bothered reloading them one by one to each page on the blog.
The maps and graphs and stuff on the blog still work though.
I am just sick and tired of the people who promote and supply services like this suddenly changing everything without consultation, with no regard to the work and effort people have put into their hobbies.
it is rampant right across the web

I may do some code alterations to japanearthquakes to drop the whole flipcard thing, seeing as it is now just full of circles with a line in the middle.
It will just be available as Classic style, ie one page after the other

I'll do it later today so yuall can see what has happened.

USGS shows that there were 49 earthquakes over 2.5 in the past 24 hours.
Does that count seem extremely higher than average?

Yeah it really sux.
I have been trying other templates but it just doesn't work the same, all the others load the whole series of pages one after the other.
There are 825 pages !
so it jams up and the browser has a fit and stops working

Oh well here goes 825 new thumbnails

the blogger olympics

What started me fiddling with it yesterday was the colour of the M3 which I changed to "teal" on the 17th June this year clashed to much with the "light blue" of the M1's, so I had decided to change back to making the M3 grey again. I had done about 20 new pies loaded them up and then went into Picasa/GooglePhotos to delete the old ones, but I clicked the wrong delete.
Most APPs or Programs have a Restore function, but not this GooglePhotos.
I searched the web for solutions, but it appears there are none.
Good one Google!
Not.

I'd go back to Wordpress, but it won't show the NZtopo interactive map, which is the whole point.
Damn.

Not sure I don't look at USGS much.
I had noticed on GFZ that the numbers were down a bit over the last 30 days.
Of course that SE of Loyalty Is 7.2 has added 11 new events today

Earlier today I felt some shaking while I was in Malibu. Not strong but a jolt. I checked and saw one small earthquake in the area.

what would cause this? mining?

It is hard to tell from the image on the link as there is no scale
Odds are it is quite small, down to 1km or less
If that is the case the cause will be the Lattitude and Longitude co-ordinates used to plot the positions are only one or two decimal points
I get that on my aftershock maps when there are a lot of them or you zoom in real close
If there are 3-4 decimal points in the data they appear more randomly on the maps

I have started on the rebuild of japanearthquakes
got 30 new thumbnails done, only 795 to go

I had a play around with excel for a day and liked the split pie graphs, so went with those
i think it shows the energy released each day better, although the graph is divided by % of the total numbers in the data, not the energy itself, but has a similar effect though.
japanquakes.blogspot.co.nz...

A few tweaks that happened when I altered the layout;
The Labels dropdown list now work off the right hand side bar (i mentioned this already)
I dropped the magnitude scale image in the title, leaves more space to view the actual pages when they pop up
Added a new Label (category) called Featured Reports,
which is the pages where I have followed a big quake with aftershocks or there was a swarm

I have expressed my displeasure at the way Google changed Picasa on a couple of Google Forum topics, but basically what is done is done, there is no way to get the old thumbnails back.

Warning to anyone who used Picasa or now uses Google Photos (the replacement), be very very very careful when you are organizing your photos, especially deleting stuff, apparently in some cases deleting from those hosting services can also delete them from your own computer, so you lose the lot completely. It seems to depend on how you uploaded them in the first place, anything to do with Google is now fraught with risk.
Lots of unhappy users out there.
