It seems some one thinks the moon and earthquakes are linked. There`s been a study. I wish I could really care or care to think about much. Right now, my mind is trying to withstand Trump and his convention. It should be over soon. He`s chanting USA as I write this, not kidding.

Here`s the link..

I feel you brother. I've been watching some seismograms just to keep my brain from turning to mush, while listening to the RNC playing in the background.

How often do you and UnderKingsPeak go to the Ear Clinic to have the wax removed from your ears?
I go about twice a year. It's an age thing, seems to get worse as you get older.

The citizens of Bando, SW Ibaraki Pref, Japan must be getting very nervous,
there was another M5.0 on the 20th Jul 2016, as well as the M5.0 on the 17th Jul
this follows the earlier M5.5 on 16th May JST as mentioned previously so they are aftershocks
Still not many aftershocks by number (193 since May) but the energy being released is getting up there at 3,696.94TTNT, which is a lot for a residential area.
I did a page on it with 2 Bing Maps, a NZTopo map with the two parts of the series colour coded, 4 waveform graphs from NIED and a timeline graph.
Bando series page
Geofon only gave the one on the 17th a 4.8Mw, but still, anyone who has felt a 4.8 from 50km away can imagine what it feels like right below you.
One thing I noticed from the maps, the Japanese sure love their golf, I think there were half a dozen Golf Courses in the Bando/Noda area, you can see them clearly on the satellite view.

Its only going to get worse, when the real election campaign against Clinton starts.
Even here in NZ on the TV news its the lead story "what outrageous thing did Trump say today"
Everyone here says "you have got to be joking, to vote this guy as president?"

Problem is, the US is full of batsh*t crazy people who could just vote this guy in after which the world might just implode.

Here is a rare one, Chatham Rise, east of Cook Strait, NZ

Public ID 2016p554847
Intensity light
Universal Time July 24 2016, 7:02:42
NZ Standard Time Sun, Jul 24 2016, 7:02:42 pm
Depth 35 km
Magnitude 4.0
Location 245 km south-east of Castlepoint
Latitude, Longitude -42.11, 178.69
www.geonet.org.nz...
Note that it started out as a 1.5 !
I guess the automated equipment was struggling with the rare location

otherwise it is quite quiet here in NZ lately, only 16 quakes across the whole country on the 23rd July UTC
Could have been due to very very strong winds interfering with the seismo's, and making them hard to read, gusts of 160km/hr in some areas. Still moving at the Kermadecs and Tonga though.

F-E Region: Tonga Islands
Time: 2016-07-23 20:09:19.4 UTC
Magnitude: 5.9 (Mw)
Epicenter: 173.62°W 15.21°S
Depth: 10 km
Status: C - confirmed

Been missing you. Good seeing your posts again.

Where do you expect the next 8+ magnitude quake if you had to guess?

RE Trump. Just realize that the screechy pants suit is AT LEAST 10 X'S WORSE on a list of key traits.

. . . particularly corrupt, vengeful, ragingly evil, pathological liar, homicidal, smugly arrogant to the max, Machiaellian to an extreme, cruel, a practicing satan worshiping witch--seriously--per Secret Service personnel; etc. etc. etc.

BO, you just described the US State Dept.
Who would you want in charge if the Cascadia M9 hits, or the North Koreans fire off a nuke at S. Korea?
Next M8 probably Solomons or Chile, based on history.

Actually that 5.0 off Haast was 4.9884ML, so still no M5's on land in New Zealand since the Mt Holdsworth 5.16 of 11/05/2016.
And this was off shore as well anyway.

Actually it is very quiet in all the regularly active places, except maybe Japan
last M5 in Turkey was a 5.2 on 2016/01/10 17:40:48 ALAHACILI-CICEKDAGI (KIRSEHIR) [South East 4.3 km]
last M5 in Italy was a 5.0 on 2013/12/29 17:08:43 San Gregorio Matese, Province of Caserta, Campania
just 2 more examples of normally very active zones

Interesting that the day after the 4.988 at Haast, NZ earthquakes numbers went crazy, from 16 and 14 the two days before, to 72 for the 26th July.
But not where you might have expected on the West Coast of the South Island.
There were a bunch of small swarms in the North Island.
east of Waipawa, and on the east side of the Ruahine ranges, and north east of Eketahuna and 3 rare (micro) quakes in the Hunua Ranges south of Auckland.
Bing map of the 26th NZ

Not sure what has happened in the last 5 days at Kumamoto, Kyushu
I noticed the increasing numbers each day, but had only recently decided to just update these long term aftershock series once a week. But I couldn't leave Kumamoto alone, had to see what the data was saying.

So we have in the last 5 day period data is available for mag~1= 460 , mag1= 90 , mag2= 21 , mag3= 3 , total= 574 total energy released= 5.526 TTNT
This is way above the average 5 day count, except in the first days after the 6.5, 6.4 and 7.3.
I don't think it is a sudden surge of micro quakes,
I'm thinking they have either installed more sensitive equipment there
or someone at JMA has decided to investigate the ~1 locations more throughly and publish the results
You can see the sudden change on the timeline graph and on the last three Bing197 maps, which there are twenty seven of now.
Hard to believe this series is only 103 days old.
mag~1= 774 , mag1= 1555 , mag2= 2913 , mag3= 895 , mag4= 105, mag5= 15 , mag6= 2 , mag7 =1, total= 6260
total energy released= 1,555,804.986TTNT

Just had another look at this, which I'm calling the "Kumamoto micro sized events data surge"
here is a timeline graph compressed to the recent week, when it happened.
new graph
I'm going to re-write the page today, I missed hundreds of NORTHERN OITA PREF data after the initial big 3 quakes, N Oita was the location of a moderate 5.4 aftershock, and although the number of aftershocks of that were way less than further south, they still carried on regardless, but I didn't include them. Brings the total to over 7000.
I had a look at SOUTHERN OITA PREF to see if I should have included that also, but that is more to the east, away from the Median Tectonic Line, so skipped those.
the 4 JMA areas included now are;
NORTHERN OITA PREF
NW KUMAMOTO PREF
NE KUMAMOTO PREF
SOUTHERN KUMAMOTO PREF

the full revision will be published later today, after I do my home chores
here is the revised full timeline graph link
