(SPOILERS)

It had great special effects and was entertaining. However, the entire movie felt completely unorginal. Finding a new hero in the destert, the wacky alien bar, hon solo's ship, a new death star and the destruction of the new death star.

They also did the same plan to destroy the new death star! Going through a tight corridor to blow up stuff in the middle.

There was probably more references to the old movies that I can't remember.

Secondly, the new darth vader was completely unscary. Is this a story about a galactic empire, or a 20 something year old son with daddy issues?

I am just wondering what you guys think? I was super hyped for the new star wars but the constant throw backs to the orginal made the plot extremely lame for me.

I think you need to remember that we who saw the original when we were teenagers are now approaching pension age ! There is complete generation who never saw the originals when released and are now adults. Never mind the new generation of kids who never saw the prequels when released! So they have to provide a link across the series. I think the new movie does that very well. It returns to the feel of the original and provides clues since it is history repeating itself. Sorry getting close to spoilers there.

However, I have to say the new "Darth Vader" is a bit wet, looks more like a naughty schoolboy. That is a weak point. It may be done on purpose who knows.

Call me a geek but I look at the movies as they play into the extended universe. This one goes along to get along.

SW is not really as dark or sinister as it is space soap opera. People love it. Space wars without the basic (and oft repeated) human drama would not make it to the screen.

It took me a bit to figure out...Why JJ Abrams? Then it dawned on me. JJ did LOST, BSG, The new Trek movies...and what did they all have in common? History repeating itself. JJ is a pro at weaving a tale of rinse, wash, repeat. And the new SW is no different. The thing is, he's right. History does repeat itself. Over and over and over. Yet we don't learn a damn thing from it.

I was entertained and appreciated the acting from 2 out of 3 new comers. BB8 was adorable. The best things about the movie were a few Han Solo moments, Daisey Ridley's performance, and the end scene. I see way too much Hayden Christensen in the new bad guy which may be intentional, but I don't like it. He had such a great entrance and then he went steeply downhill for the rest of the movie. X-Wings & TIE fighters fighting in atmosphere was pretty cool.

I felt like this movie was a lot more grounded than the prequels, less technicolor and Jedi acrobatics gave the whole movie a better feel.

I loved it, so has everyone I've talked to about it ( which is a lot of people so far ) .. the most common complaints I hear are that

1. There's too much stuff crammed in, so not enough time spent with characters.
2. The lack of time spent mourning the loss of Han

I also have a spoilery theory to throw in .. we know Snoke is a hologram ... Could it be that Snoke looks nothing like what we saw? .. Could snoke be one of the other characters we saw in TFA? ... Luke perhaps? ... I doubt it would be him .. but I fully expect a twist.

Anyway.. overall I loved it .. the complaint I see from younger viewers tends to do with the way characters look, they don't like the practical effects as much as I do .. I also think the first movie was very intentionally meant to parallel the original trilogy, I expect it to branch into it's own thing in 2 & 3 .. This was a bridge movie meant to pass the torch to the new heroes

I think that will be resolved in the second movie .. it was well established that he was struggling between the light and the dark and I think the killing of his father will drive him further to the dark .. his only tie to the light side is what I think is his sentimental side... and now only Leia is preventing him from going completely to the dark side.. Just as with Anakin, it took the death of his true love to drive him over the edge completely ..

I think Ren needs Leia and Han gone in order for him to get rid of the conflict inside him .. he's torn but desperately wants to fulfill what Vader started.. so the only thing in the way is Leia for him to make his full transition ..

Yeah, we thought ol' Kylo actually out-emoed Anakin. Hayden Christiansen ought to be ashamed.

I love the bit where he's in the cell throwing a tantrum and the two troopers turn the corner, hear him throwing a fit, don't even look at each other, they just turn heel and nope on down the way they came.

One aspect of the story-line I think was intentional was the vast similarities to ep4-ANH is to demonstrate that history has a tendency to repeat itself. And, if the forces of good are not constantly keeping the forces of evil at bay, pushing it back it will engulf us all. I read it as a message the freedom is not free, and must be repeatedly be renewed by the blood of the fight.

As for the Rey character, she is either a life created by the Metaclorians (like Anakin) but this time instead of being created by the Sith, it was created by the Jedi, Luke in particular. It is a counter-force to Anakin/Vader in an attempt to stave off the dark-side for good. After seeing all he did, and feeling himself slipping toward the dark-side (end of ep6-ROJ) and his failure with his nephew Ben, the only solution is to defeat the dark-side by creating a new Anakin life-form that does not turn to the dark-side.

Or, she is simply Luke's daughter, hidden away to prevent being killed by Ben/Kylo-Ren.

But then, I could be wrong.

Or she's another Leia/Han kid which might help explain how she was able to pick up so much from simply being exposed to Kylo Ren -> He's her brother.

I'm curious if Finn is force sensitive too.

Glad you made this thread. I thought it was wack. It wasn't as bad as 4,5, & 6 but certainly not worthy of raking in a billion dollars. It basically was a remake of #1 in terms of plot with different characters.

They will never capture the magic of Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. They are too focused on being campy, making 3d effects, and merchandising.

You have all missed the point. WHY did Kylo Ren ask his grandfather Darth Vader for help? He was feeling tempted toward the light. If he had wanted Darth Vader to help him to become more evil, he was barking up the wrong tree. Remember, Darth Vader turned back to the light in the end. So again, WHY did he ask Darth Vader to help him? Was he merely unaware that Vader had turned back to the light upon his death? Or was he calling on the GOOD Darth Vader to help him?

Here's a theory: The way to defeat Supreme Leader Snoke is to become a Sith himself and go undercover, embedding completely in the Sith world. He asked his father to help him do the hardest thing, the one thing he didn't think he could do, the one thing he MUST do to complete his mission - he needed to kill someone he loves to become a Sith. So that he can ultimately defeat Supreme Leader Snoke.

BTW I did not come up with this myself but I definitely think this is the correct interpretation.

Saw it twice, once in IMAX, other in regular 3-D. Didn't care much for the IMAX version. But overall, great movie. BB-8....adorable, Rey - MORE adorable (yeah - nerd crush going on). And what's not to like about lots of scenes with Chewie at his finest? Thumbs up!

I thought it was great. Yes, there were a lot of parallels, but there should have been a lot of parallels. It's also the first in the new saga, so there has to be a lot of passing the baton and setup for what is to come.

Kylo Ren isn't supposed to be the "New Vader" IMO, in fact, I believe when he always to "grandfather", he is speaking to Anakin Skywalker, and his long range plan is to go full dark, redeem himself, and ultimately sacrifice himself for the greater good. He doesn't want to be the dark side bad guy. Plus, he can stop blaster plasma bolts mid-air, and extract memories from minds. Some pretty awesome things, which Vader couldn't do.

Geek on.

Agreed about being unoriginal.

I think they rushed the plot aswell.

They couldve made a whole movie about the journey to finding luke with the map and following his steps.

I wanted to know how the son became bad and went to the dark side. I wanna know what happened between him and luke. They missed the backstory and rushed the plot.

What about the rougue stormtrooper? I thought this was really cool twist but again, How did he happen to be a dud? What makes his brain not like the other clones? I mean cmon "CLONES" how come he wasnt a perfect clone..

Overall it was good, but they need to do better. Be ashame if they squeeze the money out of "Star Wars" with more bs movies like they did with "Hangover 2 and 3" or "spider man"

I did find the movie had a good amount of laughs, I did not regret spending my money, but again because of the name they need to step it up.

I'd say basically it was a transition film.

There was a lot thrown in from past Star Wars and introduction to a new story.

I loved it for what it is. It is the next one that is critical.

Besides the special effects are awesome.

I saw it twice and I enjoyed it. It was a Star Wars film and that is exactly what I wanted as a fan of the series. I thought it was as good as Episodes IV and V.

It's most redeeming quality was the death of han solo. It's a continuation, not a reboot, and it recycled a lot of plot devices. Killing han off was easily its most distinguishing scene. Even so, what's up with the barely-padawan besting a sith?
