It must be very sad being in love with a stormy (manic depressive/depressed) person because we don't know how to help them or ourselves.

Bachs Cello Suite 2 & 4. Especially the Courantes. Parts of them are sad and full of despair with a fusion of anger. At least I always feel wells of sad emotion when I play or listen to them.

Why not upload the songs for our convenience and reflection?

Hard Time Killing Floor Blues

I'll post both Versions by the original artist, Skip James

The original 1930's version

And the more polished, ethereal sounding 1960's version

This song is always soaked in sadness for me... it's beautiful but very sad.

going through a divorce right now and this hits home for me.

parkway drive- blue and the grey

Dear sky,
Dear sky don't cry for me,
(cry for me)
Be the hope I could never reach
Cold sea,
Please don't let me sink,
(don't let me sink)
Wrap your arms around me and carry me home

I stood at the shore and spoke to the ocean
I stood in the water and let my guts spill
I said "You and me, we're not so different,
I see my reflection in all that you do"

We both keep our secrets
We're both, oh so blue
My heart is full of darkness
I know that yours is too

I sat on the rooftop and screamed at the sky
I sat on the edge until I knew deep inside,
Like the sky, I will always be empty
The horizon, my love, forever just out of reach

We both keep our secrets
We're both, oh so blue
My heart is full of darkness
I know that yours is too

anyone else here from a broken/abusive family?

artist: Five finger death punch
song: the devils own

"The Devil's own
Why!?

Where did I go wrong? Who was I supposed to be?
No matter what I've done, you've always criticized me
Where did I go wrong? Who was I supposed to be?
When it's said and done, will you remember...

Slap on the wrist, smack in the face
The family tree, gave me a name and nothing more
Neglected seed, why!?

It's because of you I'm broken
It's because of you I'm dead inside
I never asked to be here
It's because of you I'm godforsaken
I never wanted this
It's because of you I'm dead inside

Where did I go wrong? Who was I supposed to be?
No matter what I've done, you've always criticized me
What did I do wrong? What was I supposed to be?
When it's said and done, will you remember me?

A happy home, a fairy tale, a broken dream
Gave me a life, then turned away
Killed everything, why!?

It's because of you I'm broken
It's because of you I'm dead inside
I never asked to be here
It's because of you I'm godforsaken
I never wanted this
It's because of you I'm dead inside

#!
Father, bastard, I'm the Devil's very own
Mother, know not, just who I've become
Father, hate me, for being all you're not
Mother's baby, I hate what I've become
I hate what I've become
I hate what I've become

It's because of you I'm broken
It's because of you I'm dead inside

Where did I go wrong? Who was I supposed to be?
No matter what I've done, you've always criticized me
What did I do wrong? What was I supposed to be?
When it's said and done, will you remember me?"

Sarah McLaughlan Arms of the Angels. Both depressing and somewhat comforting at the same time.

Two of the most depressing songs for sure...

Rows of houses, all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out

This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all go under
And fade out again and fade out again

Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out again

Immerse your soul in love
IMMERSE YOUR SOUL IN LOVE

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal

You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit, my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)

This song is about Bradley Knowell's battle with heroin and how he was resigned to eventually die from it. To anyone who didn't know Bradley died of a heroin overdose in 1996. Pool shark was written in 94.

Seeing Moby reminded me of the sample of Vera Hall he used in another track

This is the original

Another of Vera's definitely belongs here.

Yeah, natural blues, that's another I find a bit depressing, something about her voice

I liked the Moby album when it came out, was a lot of decent tracks on it.
But in terms of raw, emotive and "sad" sounding vocals... I think Vera Hall's original acapella from the 1930's just sound much better.

Alan Lomax who travelled and collected the music and songs for The Library of Congress Field Recordings said

"Her singing is like a deep-voiced shepherds flute, mellow and pure in tone, yet always with hints of the lips and the pleasure-loving flesh...The sound comes from deep within her when she sings, from a source of gold and light, otherwise hidden, and falls directly upon your ear like sunlight. It is a liquid, full contralto, rich in low overtones; but it can leap directly into falsetto and play there as effortlessly as a bird in the wind."

And there is something just incredibly deep about her voice. It just gets to you.

Yeah moby did a decent job, but I agree, the raw recordings are something else, always gives me the chills. To be honest, listening to Natural Blues again, and then the acapella, as decent of a job as he did, it takes a lot out of what you feel when you hear the raw Acapella, the emotion? I dunno if that's the right word?

Absolutely mate, there are many layers and the Moby track is very "busy" and he has an electronic effect on her voice too... it's too polished almost, but when all of that is stripped away you're left with something humble, pure and yes, very emotional.
It hits you for sure.
