Erdogan used to view Gulen as a promoter of Turkey. Instead, Gulen promoted his own, more-Islamist vision of Turkey with the help of his collection of media outlets: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines. He owns many of them. And he has used them to challenge a small, rag-tag group of Sunnis who have taken him to task. Gulen doesn’t like the competition.
It has initiated forums for interfaith dialogue.
Some have praised the movement as a pacifist, modern-oriented version of Islam, and as an alternative to more extreme schools of Islam such as Salafism.
