Hello AtSers..!

Looks like another scandal about to hit the heart of Washington. Information leaked by Wikileaks suggest the apple is rotten to the core. Shame government does not have the same level of transparency that they expect off their own citizens.

Thirteen Presidential Appointees (ten Obama, three Bush) are embroiled in a multi-billion dollar corruption scandal being probed by the US Department of Justice and four Inspector Generals.

The appointees oversee the federal government's $3billion a year "AbilityOne" program which is meant to pay for the employment of more than 50,000 disabled people--the largest such program in the United States.

cant link to wikileaks because its against the rules.

Tapes reportedly provide evidence that a programme intended to encourage the hiring of disabled people was mired in corruption.

The tapes are intended to provide evidence that billions of dollars meant for disabled people went instead to defence contractors and other major corporations without large proportions of disabled employees.

Now if we could just get together and realize both sides of our political spectrum are corrupt, enact 1 term limits for congress, take money out of politics and lobbying, reduce congressional pay to probably 35,000 a year, get rid of our unconstitutional NSA, Homeland security and spying on Americans and then regulate the heck out of banks and wall street, we'd be okay!

I am going to have a heart attack and die of not surprised.

Not certain what the point of wikileaks is, they only really release things that people already pretty much know. They still censor the things they release and decide what is releasable and what is not. Not much different from the governments really.

They know what is best for us. If they were really noteworthy, they would just release what they have. They are kind of like anonymous; make a little noise once in awhile in an attempt to stay relevant.

They have a news portal which allows the people to send leaks. It allows information to be published that would otherwise not find itself in the news. There are laws in place that allow most news portals to be controlled in what they say and what stories are released. Free press would be dead it it was not for the likes of WL.

In the past they have won awards for their journalism. The Mannings leaks allowed the objective documentation of a war.
That is a first in history.

Yes you are correct but the more this is seen and documented the more people think about it. An informed public can make informed decisions..

Okay, BUT WILL ANYONE BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE?

That's the real question.

We all are aware of the corrupt nature of things behind the scenes, especially in our current times. But what difference does it make if these things come to the light of the public and STILL no one gets held accountable?

I will be following this but certainly not holding my breath..

Not sure if people will be held to account these kind of issues have a habit of disappearing one way or another. But to make an informed choice you need information.

We all make choices

Uh, no.
Maybe a scapegoat will, but not the actual ner-do-wells.

Thanks for your response. I totally agree - we first need to Identify the issues, then have a dialogue about them to organize thoughts, then take action.

It's so frustrating though - it's difficult to figure out where to invest resources. Small grass-roots movements would be my first thought, but what resources are available in this instance? Very little - relying mainly on donations and volunteers.

How do we get organized action for issues like this?

I agree with all you said. However, the deck is stacked against us. The fox is guarding the hen house when it comes to changing the way congress and government departments operate. Congress votes for their own salary increases, and they would also have to vote to for term limits. It's like you deciding when you should get a raise and how long you can stay at your job. You wouldn't vote for your own salary decrease from $174,000 to a temporary 1 term limit wage of $35,000. You wouldn't want to stop big campaign contributors that help keep your cushy overpaid political position.

Until some of the power is taken away from congress and given directly to the people by putting these items on the ballot for the majority of Americans to decide, we will never see change! There should be ballot referendums on things such as, congressional salaries, campaign finance reform, policies that infringe on our personal freedoms and term limits. Anything that could be considered self-serving to these politicians should be up for a public referendum.

Until then, our congressional representative will continue to think they have every right to make a political career out of a government position that should only be temporary. They'll continue to be absurdly overpaid and have no way of relating to the average American who in the end pays for their salaries and pensions! Unfortunately our political system will continue to be influenced by corporations and the rich while average American voices fall on deaf ears.

I dont really have the answers I have spent time myself in the pasts at protests and participating in acts of civil disobedience. Later was involved in online protests and what i have taken from this is there is a war going on for the minds of people.
The war is information.

Through the control of mass media the consent of the people is given. Without this consent it would change fast. Try to wage a war without the backing of the masses.

The spread of information is controlled even to some extent on the internet. That is why I like to share information...

happy day to you

The companies involved with the ability one program are required to have 75% of their man hours worked by disabled employees. And that's not just the operations directly working for the Govt. that's supposed to be across the board at all those companies' locations.

Anyone working directly around these operations can tell that is just not the case. It also looks like they use a very loose definition of "disabled".
