Gatwick Airport North Terminal evacuated 'for protection of the public' after suspicious item found.

Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal was evacuated “for the protection of the public” this morning after a suspicious item was found.

Hundreds of people were photographed standing outside the airport in the rain after being told to leave the airport at around 10am.

Witnesses said armed police were arresting a man believed to have a gun in his bag.

It's too early to tell if this is connected to the terrible events of last night in Paris. Details are a little thin on the ground as to what kind of firearm, which way the person was travelling and other important nuggets of info. There is obviously heightened security with recent events. It will be interesting to see if it's actually an antiques dealer transporting a piece for someone or a bona-fide member of Daesh that could help shed some light on things...

I read it was a handgrenade, but not from a very reliable sorce. We will just have to see how this unfolds

It could be a deactivated one or even a grenade style lighter, the problem is that until they know its safe they have to assume its live and go boom at a moments notice so they have procedures in place.

Its only a theory but I think some sort of reporting restriction has been placed on this.

Mainstream news were reporting this as it broke but now, not a dicky bird. Also, watching the Twitter feeds and some people are complaining to @bbc @sky and @lbc asking why they have removed all tweets relating to it.
