Wow maybe aircraft carriers for Aussies? hope so, gave up hope and never thought I`d hear the day,

One for the east and one for the west maybe.

Haven`t done it for a long time ( not sure if we`re still allowed ) but when the US carrier comes and anchors about 10km off Fremantle, I take my boat Mrs and mates anyone who wants to come out to them, I get close enough to have a G`day and a chat to the crew still on board. They like it as much as us.

As I alluded to Hutchy. Fine example. I have savoured the delights of Broome often.

That would be a great experience triple7. I had the pleasure of visiting the Enterprise and the Forrestral in my days overseas. Impressive to say the least. Enjoyed my time in the company of the yanks and their hardware.

Come to Charleston and see Patriots Point. She's older, but so beautiful.

Had a chance to get a tour of a carrier in San Diego when travelling there with a mate who was is the USAF . Took the 2nd left instead of the 3rd or something and a very angry marine pointed his gun at us at the checkpoint . Luckily an officer calmed him down . Quote . " you will drive fifty yards , you will turn left , you will drive 20 yards , you will turn left , you will leave the base " . Only went there to get cheap beer and a navy dude said why dont you take a tour .

Lol, I remember in Pearl after a stint at sea (Rimpac), although pissed on Buds, much the same experience however I got saluted by the marine in the end and given a robot like direction to my ship and thought WTF, I'm only a flamin rating and soaked. Officer on watch on my ship was less than impressed though but I was polite ha.

Nah got the beer at the AAFCANS before our wrong directions . I wont mention the nice lady who let us back into America after we left to go to Tijuana without getting an exit visa , or the very angry Canadian border gaurd who said we could not get into Canada . If it was today we would be hunted by interpol .

Ha ha , luckily for us , my wife and i plus Geoff and Darlene this was shortly after crocodile dundee . It would be fair to say we got a lot of leeway for some of the things we did . The policeman did not arrest for taking pictures of the exon valdez in a restricted area . The bar lady at a bar in Cedar City in Utah shut the place at 10 as per regulations , closed it down and fed us beer until 3 in the morning . Seen a big horned ram up close in glacier national park . But my biggest regret was i did not see a bear . Had a chance , but that would have meant going over a slight hill in Yellowstone to get a look at a mother Grizzly and her cub , i passed . Maybe i should make a thread but honestly no one would believe me . And i havent even got close to our adventures .

Yes, agree.

I have to say this is a fine looking ship. If I understand, the hull was made in Spain and based on the Spanish equivalent which carries Harriers. Therefore, it's no big deal for this ship to be "future-proofed" for jets.

Wishing Australia well in the World Cup, by the way.

I am not sure i totally agree with that statement but then again i didnt like the warthog when i first seen pictures . As for the world cup , its not a code of footy that i follow in Australia but as always i will barrack for my country .

I'm sure the USMC would love to have some of those for their Expeditionary Forces. Imagine one of those fitted with those new Navy rail guns and a full complement of drones.

Well done!

The ship does seem to be lightly armed in this case .

The ship is only lightly armed with four Typhoon 25mm remote rapid fire guns, but in a high tempo conflict situation she would never sail without ‘cover’ from either Air Warfare Destroyers (AWDs), Frigates or Submarines or a combination of all three.

That's about standard for just about any type of carrier. They're not like WWII carriers that were loaded for bear. Carriers, even assault carriers rely on escorts for the brunt of their defenses.
