A blimp associated with NORAD's surveillance of the East Coast has become untethered from is mooring in Maryland and it's now flying over Pennsylvania, according to NORAD spokesman Lt. Joe Mavrocki.

It's unclear what the current danger is to the public or how the blimp will be brought back down.

NORAD 'blimp' comes loose from tether

Two F-16s scrambled from the New Jersey National Guard are tracking the blimp, a Pentagon official said.

So will they shoot it down because of civil aircraft danger
Should Canada shoot it down if it come over the border ?????
Or will this add to the UFO picture album lol

I was posting this as you were, apparently. You beat me to it! I've posted there asking the mods to close it.

I'll copy and paste what I said there:

I spent a few years in another town next to a base with a very similar blimp. Took a field trip to it once and we got to see the operations, especially raising the blimp early in the morning and attaching the mooring to it. How badly does someone have to mess up to accomplish losing it? Very badly.

Last I heard, they've scrambled a few F-16's to take this thing down somewhere safe.

This happened years ago to the blimp in the Florida Keys. It was en route to Cuba so they scrambled some Navy fighter jets to shoot it down.

Nice....$180 Million in taxpayer dollars shot down....

Ridiculous....way to go US government! Blow through that money and have no backup plan for something that breaks free to bring it down without shooting it down....brilliant!

I'm speculating that the U.S. Air Force will have to shoot down the runaway blimp with an air to air missile. I live on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland --- and the two blimps tethered high in the air --- posed an intriguing sight indeed. Though last week...the military at Aberdeen Proving Ground, seemed to have raised the two blimps much higher in altitude.

And likely all at the taxpayers cost.....I feel like when things like this happen we should be able to take a tax deduction for the year....ridiculous.

Say-
what are the elements within this blimp that makes it go skyward?

how blimps work

I guess 16000 feet above any populace is safe enough to ignite?
(evil-over-lord---themesong)
I'll twiddle my thumbs until it's two or three hundred feet above "the metropolis my co-planners agree on".

I'd think the story would go more like...coming from mighty and powerful norad-our protector.
A destroyed blimp that became severed from it's tether was targeted for destruction high above the city this morning before it could descend as an incendiary, waking people Hindenburg-style.
