The United Nations is about Peace. How Mr. Abbas could possibly entertain that this announcement is in keeping with anything the United Nations stands for, boggles a rational mind. What he has announced is the antithesis of peace.

What part of what he said is counter to peace?

ETA: Or at least any different than the status quo with those two?

Good for Palestine.

So it took this long for Palestine to figure out that the Oslo accords were nothing but a cover for Israel to use as it stole Palestine? Now Israel will use this as an excuse to beg more money and weapons from America to fight against the imaginary Palestinian military.

Let Israel deal with their problems. We're all about no intervention, no imperialism, remember? Let Palestine deal with Israel itself.

Yes bottle rocket throwers that the IDF wets their pants when they have to actually fight them face to face.

This may be an unpopular stance, but we need to cease our alliance with Israel and get our people out of the Middle East.

Nothing good comes from our being there--only death and destruction and the swapping of regimes from one dangerous, dishonest leader for another. That area of the world is doomed by its own perpetual-war cancer that has metastasized in that region for thousands of years.

Mr. Netanyahu may well make the Palestinian issue the primary focus of his speech, and will probably repeat his recent statements that he is ready to restart negotiations with President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority anywhere, anytime. Mr. Netanyahu insists that these talks have no preconditions — but that itself is a condition he knows the Palestinian leader will not accept. (Mr. Abbas has insisted that he will resume negotiations only if Israel releases long-serving Palestinian prisoners, halts construction of West Bank settlements and bases the talks on the pre-1967 lines that divided Israel from the West Bank and Gaza Strip.)

Exactly
Israel has nothing to gain by peace apart from another hateful Arab state on its border. Nothing to fear from the Palestinians either now their birt rates are dropping and the Heridi population is breeding like some sort of come back kid from the holocaust reduction. Israel has nothing to gain from a peace that will be a fake peace, a half time from what they know will return. For little Israel as a newbe settler state it's either fight on and keep battling or go down the South African route and give in.

They get three billion plus a year crying how Israel needs help protecting themselves from them. Who in their right mind wants to kill off a cash cow?

Seeing how Israel is an apartheid state they have already gone the South African route.

How would President Trump handle this? Would he say, "Tough! Let them fight it out. It's none of our business."?

The troubles in the ME will not end until the Sykes Picot maps are redrawn to the content of the Arab world.

What we're seeing in the big ME picture has its roots there.

I don't blame Palestine at all.

But I have to wonder at the timing, if it's part of a broader, strategic effort coordinated through Iran by Russia, given their recent movements in Syria?

Blimey
What a time to say such a thing. With Russia on Israel's border maybe the Arabs are getting a little bit confident of kicking out the Zionist regime. It's all going Pete Tong today in the Middle East.

Arabs are getting a little bit confident of kicking out the Zionist regime? More like the Palestinians as a whole. Other Arabs could care less about the Palestinians. SA, Egypt, UA Emirates, etc. don't help the Palestinians at all but only like to play them against Israel. SA has a better relationship with Israel than the Palestinians.

I think everyone needs to educate themselves with the conflict of religion and schism's in the middle east and who has alliance with whom. It is so complicated and goes back much further than what is happening today. Just to expand on UnBreakable's post if I may? Link

Arab States, much to the chagrin of the people they supposedly represent, have formed an unspoken alliance with Israel. This has allowed Israel to intentionally create a humanitarian crisis and keep the Gaza situation unresolved.

After decades of conflict, Wahhabi clerics are coming out and freely stating their hidden beliefs.

Wahhabis are Sunni Muslims who believe in an ultraconservative interpretation of Islam. They consider non Muslims and less radical Muslims as infidels. This form of Islam is most common in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar. It is also the brand of Islam followed by several terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and the Taliban.

A Wahabbi Egyptian cleric, Tala’at Zahran, calls on Egyptians not to support Palestinians against Israel. He claims “most Gazans are Shias and communists.”

Zahran, who is also the representative of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), in response to the question of whether Egypt should help the people of Gaza against Israeli military strikes, said, “They are Shia and using missiles against the innocent people of Israel, so Israel is forced to retaliate by bombing Gaza.”

Although Zahran and others are factually incorrect about Palestinians being Shia and about who instigated the latest round of fighting in Gaza, he has made his point clear that Wahhabism prefers to defend Israel over Shia. Palestinians are Sunni Muslims, mostly Wahhabi favored, and there is some evidence that they were responsible for many Shia killings in Iraq.

ShiaWave reported that Hamas is claimed to be sending fighters and weapons to ISIS in Iraq. Palestinians in general and Hamas in particular, are clearly not Shia and have no interest in Shiism.

I find this whole thing mind boggling and with deeper roots than most are aware of.

Olmert dismisses Abbas’ promises of a bombshell as “much ado about not much.”

Nor are some on the Palestinian side holding out much hope that anything Abbas has to say could breathe life back into the obsolescent peace process.

“I think it will be just like what we have seen in the past -- attempts to create excitement and enthusiasm around speeches that end up being nothing but symbolism,” said Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.

www.voanews.com...

Much discussion around that Abbas' comments don't really carry any weight, or will change anything. Some are viewing it as meaningless theatrics, and trying to bring the world's focus back on Palestine, as so many other things going on in the ME has diminished interest in Palestine.

I'm not familiar enough with him to know if he is given to drama-queen hissy fits. He sounded determined and sincere to me.

Convenient. Palestine has Iranian backing, and now we're backing Iran.
