Because some religions, and their "sacred books" deserve to be attacked, and shown for what they are. Note I said the religion. Not its adherents. There's a difference. If I have to explain that, then it wouldn't be understood anyway.

Religion catches all of the flack for atheist perceptions of societies ills. If religion were gone tomorrow you would still war and oppress people for territory,resources etc. Other systems would replace it and become polarized and you would still have ideological wars.

Just take climate change for instance. I cant see where religion has any place in that debate but many are passionate about it whichever side you fall on. Eventually a technocratic resource management culture would seek to oppress those who did not agree.

I just fail to see the utopia where people don't steal, kill, lie, etc just because religion is gone. The middle east would still be a war zone because of the resources there. The religious rhetoric is a rallying point for the people who disagree.

It isn't that a world without religion would solve all those things, because it wouldn't. Nor would I be for a world without the personal liberty to believe in a deity of your own choosing. That's not freedom. That's oppression.

What I am vehemently against is religious privilege, religious oppression, and religion in government. We've had thousands of years of all three of the aforementioned, all over the world. It hasn't worked. It doesn't work. It's time to do things differently.

Nobody is claiming Utopia. But it would be nice for a change for the Religiously Programmed Talking Heads to just admit that their precious Bible is one of the most Immoral, Brutal, Sick, Demented book of MYTHS ever written.
