It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare. (Montford’s book organizes the facts very well.) I don’t believe that any real physicist, nay scientist, can read that stuff without revulsion. I would almost make that revulsion a definition of the word scientist.

theres more in his letter that he talks about , some very interesting insights there

Let the calling me a science denier begin!

I do feel the need to add one note, and this is conjecture, since it is always risky to discuss other people's motives. This scheming at APS HQ is so bizarre that there cannot be a simple explanation for it. Some have held that the physicists of today are not as smart as they used to be, but I don't think that is an issue. I think it is the money, exactly what Eisenhower warned about a half-century ago. There are indeed trillions of dollars involved, to say nothing of the fame and glory (and frequent trips to exotic islands) that go with being a member of the club.

Well thats very interesting to note........he says a lot in his letter, not just about Global warming but about the Scientific community as a whole, and how its been taken over by money instead of being driven by the truth and discovery

Let the slamming and calling me a science denier commence!

Interesting and censored already...

Reading it now....thanks!

It would seem they are automating more and more on ATS. Twitter as an example. While they may nix posts here they still show up as headlines on Twitter.

Anywho...again...reading article with interest!

The UK Telegraph?

I followed the link that that is where it went.

I read the UK Telegraph sometimes.

It isn't exactly a sketchy site.

Not a site I'd censor from ATS.

I believe the article. I have a friend who is a meteorologist at NASA.

I asked him several years ago about global warming.
He asked my opinion and I said, no I want your opinion.

He proceeded to say that the climate does change, get warmer and cooler,
but that mankind has absolutely nothing to do with it.
He said it is a function of natural cycles that happen regularly on the earth.

Censor? Could it be to shut down discussion and the truth?
Hmmmmmmm.

Probably just a guy getting paid to say what he is saying.

Because that is what it is when it is supporting it right?

Wonder if we are going to have people come in and explain why this is the un biased source that we need and how it is a 'true' scientist.

I got a better source:
www.aps.org - (APS News)
APS Responds to Member’s Resignation over Climate Change

In early October, a long-time member of APS, Hal Lewis, publicly resigned from the Society over issues having to do with climate change. Lewis, who is an emeritus professor at UC Santa Barbara, addressed his letter of resignation to APS President Curtis Callan, simultaneously circulating it on the Internet. In response to some of the points in Lewis’s letter, APS issued a statement that can be found on the press-release page of the APS website. Callan also sent a personal reply to Lewis in which he expressed his regret at Lewis’s decision, along with his strong disagreement with the substance of Lewis’s complaints against the APS.

In his letter to Lewis, Callan also addressed the issue of the formation of the new topical group, explaining that, far from being rejected, the proposal for a topical group focusing on the physics of climate had met with enthusiastic acceptance and was being implemented (see October APS News). Callan closed his letter by saying that, while he respected Lewis’s decision to resign, it was a pity that, by doing so, he was cutting himself off from participating in the very APS initiative he had called for.

Not particularly, it is one man's view. Just wondering how his would counter all the others that disagree.

When they get brought up it is just"they have to say that to keep their pockets fat".

Like there is no money in keeping the things the way they are.

Interesting story. He is was one of the most respected people in his field it would seem. What I find really interesting is that I can't find anything on how he died. Granted, he was old, but still nothing of how he died anywhere that I can find.

I really find it interesting that after 67 years with APS he wrote that letter and resigned. There is nothing out there to say he was a quack or otherwise either. I would say he may be the most credible scientist in the industry to have come out with what he believes is the reality and truth of the situation.

Great thread MBTM!

Interesting.

My own view is that deforestation and billions of humans spewing carbon (etc) has to effect our atmosphere and the sad fact is that humans have grown to be numerous enough to effect planetary atmospheres... it's just math.

As far as the details, money sure could (and has, and will) corrupt science... but the climate basics are fairly sound and grounded in general trends for the admittedly chaotic, complex system that is Earth's atmosphere.

I wish climate change was all bunk, but the basic trends say otherwise... however the point that money corrupts science and thus, public policy, should be carefully examined... but not at the expense of waiting forever to clean our act up.

This shouldn't be used as an excuse for people to forget about a strained ecosystem.

Not the first to quit the gravy train nor the last.

Other UN scientists were more blunt. A South African UN scientist declared the UN IPCC a “worthless carcass” and noted IPCC chair Pachauri is in “disgrace”. He also explained that the “fraudulent science continues to be exposed.” Alexander, a former member of the UN Scientific and Technical Committee on Natural Disasters harshly critiqued the UN. “‘I was subjected to vilification tactics at the time. I persisted. Now, at long last, my persistence has been rewarded…There is no believable evidence to support [the IPCC] claims

Strongly Agree with you there, money makes the world go round..

However, Global Warning is not man made either, it's all lies and agenda driven. Global warming is a natural process.

How does that make sense? He quit BECAUSE of that, if it was about money he would have stayed

I love the mental gymnastics in this thread already, lol

Says you...
Not saying there isn't people trying to make a buck off this but seems we have this love affair that anyone speaking against it is doing so from the stance of science whIle those that warn about it are just shills and bunk scientist.

You do realize that the APS has 50,000+ members? Hal Lewis wasn't a climate scientist, cited no research (at all) and in fact, the "evidence" presented in this letter was all purely unscientific in nature; for example:

3. In the interim the ClimateGate scandal broke into the news, and the machinations of the principal alarmists were revealed to the world. It was a fraud on a scale I have never seen, and I lack the words to describe its enormity. Effect on the APS position: none. None at all. This is not science; other forces are at work.

Since he' wasn't a climatologist and had apparently no direct experience with this "scam" of his own, what is this supposed to prove? That an old physicist can have opinions that are based more on politics and the media than his own research and experience?

Ok, great.

That is not the argument, the question is whether 500 parts of CO2 in a million is creating a warming trend. Most of the scientist that don't agree with IPCC want a better and cleaner earth but don't see a carbon tax and the trading of carbon tax in the derivatives casino as rewarding our environment, it clearly rewards governments and banks.
