Yes cap and trade may not be the answer but to use that to discredit the idea is throwing the baby out with the bath water. As in let's still work on reducing it and not using cap and trade to do it.

The baby is already thrown out with the bathwater when you insist that everyday humans should somehow be blamed for the messes of others.

And that by our votes we can affect the change we need, that the OIL companies are all that there is too blame, and that all the technology stopped from us is because of EVERYDAY PEOPLE and their greed.

No.
We are exactly those "others." We are the ones who demand cheap energy. We are the ones who resist change to the status quo.

Us. We are "them."

And until attitudes change we will continue to be our own worst enemy.

I wouldn't bother asking ATS. If you haven't noticed, there's a very vocal right-wing contingent here who are positive that global warming is a hoax invented by Al Gore so that the government can rake in extra tax dollars (ignoring the fact that corporations and wealthy individuals effectively control the government).

The only way they'd accept AGW as fact is if you found a way to blame it on Muslims and Hispanic immigrants.

EDIT:

or the EPA, the FDA, SNAP recipients, gay marriage, abortion or black lives matter.

As the obligatory evil vocal 'right' winger.

Funny that people will give AL Gore 'credit' for inventing the 'internets', but not 'global warming'.

Maybe the global warming crowd should stop blowing so much HOT AIR.

Did you know that Exxon was researching Climate Change back in the late 1970s?

At a meeting in Exxon Corporation's headquarters, a senior company scientist named James F. Black addressed an audience of powerful oilmen. Speaking without a text as he flipped through detailed slides, Black delivered a sobering message: carbon dioxide from the world's use of fossil fuels would warm the planet and could eventually endanger humanity.

"In the first place, there is general scientific agreement that the most likely manner in which mankind is influencing the global climate is through carbon dioxide release from the burning of fossil fuels," Black told Exxon's Management Committee, according to a written version he recorded later.

It was July 1977 when Exxon's leaders received this blunt assessment, well before most of the world had heard of the looming climate crisis.

James Black, sadly, died in 1988.

I think that's rather before Gore wrote a book about it. Exxon turned its back on its own research later.

Two questions:

What is Giaever's field in physics?
Does he claim that data has been manipulated to support AGW?

Have you watched it? Can you answer my questions about it?

The problem is not making things out of petroleum. The problem is burning petroleum. Actually, burning it is pretty wasteful, never mind the CO2 it produces.

Some of us just mention this because lots of ppl are against any kind of exploration and drilling... we know that the Prez shut down offshore drilling after the BP spill, and though you might find it distasteful, there are CT's suggesting that the spill as deliberate, or at least the admin didn't let a good crisis go to waste. You know kinda like how the liberals said 9-11 was a pretext for war.
Of course I like to also point out that while the Prez put a moratorium on US offshore drilling, he at the same time donated our tax dollars to develop Petrobas, a Brazillian(re:foreign socialist) oil co. and some people do wonder about things like that.

I am 100% sure that after the numbers are "adjusted" globally by the controlling powers we will be told it was the hottest year ever in Earth's billions of years of history. And sheeple will believe it!

Why does it always have to be right-wing ? I have plenty of friends from all persuasions that believe the statement above.Of course they are for the most part intelligent well-read people. I call it rather being scientifically minded.

You call believing the lie that Al Gore invented Global Warming to increases taxes being "scientifically minded"? I call that being willfully ignorant since there is plenty of documentation saying that Climate Change has not only been talked about LONG before Al Gore said anything about it in scientific communities, but that is undoubtedly a real thing.

Good job proving his point neo.

The History of Climate Science

Mid-1960s: the first Climate Model - Mannabe and Wetherald

By 1967, the first computer model that simulated the entire planet's climate had been developed by Syukuro Manabe, working in collaboration with Richard Wetherald. It may have been relatively basic compared to modern models, but nevertheless they found that the movement of heat through convection kept the temperature from running away to extreme levels: however, if the amount of CO2 doubled, temperature would rise by some 2°C. Convective updraughts, such as those that can lead to thunderstorm development, transport a lot of heat from Earth's surface up towards the upper troposphere: a warming surface enhances the process, so that more and more heat is carried up and finds its way to levels where it may be re-radiated out into Space. If the surface got warmer, convection would carry more heat up. This important additional control addressed a long-standing problem that few workers, with the notable exception of Hulburt, had examined in depth.

are there not a lot of volcanoes under water spewing out heat????
they have being doing this for many years.....

would this not contribute an input of heat energy to the oceans????
what about the Pacific ring of fire...underwater chain of volcanoes?????

an honest reply and I am wondering,,,volcanoes are heat producing engines.......a reply to: mbkennel

If the extra heat came from volcanic activity, it would appear first in lower depths and in the geologically active zones, and sporadically.

It does not.

The heating comes from surface (increased greenhouse flux) as it was first observable in the upper areas and then to the lower.

Unfortunately, you appear to be as ignorant and aggressive as the stereotype of the right winger.

a) the scientific issue in global warming and the engineering of Internet didn't come from Al Gore.

b) Nevertheless, for a politician, Al Gore was quite far ahead of his peers in recognizing technical and scientific advances and discoveries with large impact to society at large. He was doing his job.

c) Vint Cerf (who did invent a big chunk of Internet) has praised Gore for his help in the early deployment & funding of what became the public Internet.
