The quake's epicenter was about 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Illapel, Chile, USGS said. It occurred around 7:54 p.m. (6:45 p.m. ET) and had a depth of 33 kilometers (20.5 miles).

"Widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible" along the coast of Chile and Peru, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Let's forego the doom and gloom by just hoping the damage and lives lost are at a minimum.

8.3 isn't anything to scuff at.

Oh man when I saw this title I was ready to read about death and destruction.
Should add that it wasn't a good feeling! Got that sick in your stomach feeling upon seeing it.
Hope there is no tsunami.

For the past eight or so years there have been huge shakers in New Zealand, Japan, and Chile multiple times. I'm just wondering why the northeastern side of the Pacific plate hasn't seen anything of this magnitude. I'm not a geologist, though.

Hoping for the best for Chile once again.

Santiago is about 145mi. from the epicenter...and they report only shaken buildings...other cities closer to the epicenter haven't reported anything to date.
