Judge upholds Arizona's 'show your papers' immigration law

Another court ruling about that controversial "show us your papers" law in Arizona that's been the center of attention for a while.

Looks like this court found the "policy" isn't *really* directed at Hispanics !!

This comes after another Court approved a "deal" that apparently dismisses some of the civil rights lawsuits against Sheriff Joe Arpaio.


Judge upholds Arizona's 'show your papers' immigration law

A federal judge has upheld part of Arizona's contentious immigration law, rejecting claims that the so-called "show your papers" section of the law discriminated against Hispanics.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton on Friday was on the last of seven challenges to the 2010 law. The section being upheld allows police in Arizona to check the immigration status of anyone they stop.

Bolton ruled that immigration rights activists failed to show that police would enforce the law differently for Hispanics than other people. The section is sometimes called the "show your papers" provision.

A judge has approved a nearly two-month-old settlement ending a lawsuit by the U.S. Justice Department that alleged several civil rights violations against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office.

U.S. District Judge Roslyn Silver officially signed off Wednesday on the agreement that resolves allegations Arpaio's office retaliated against its critics, discriminated against Latinos during the sheriff's now-defunct workplace raids and punished Latino jail inmates with limited English skills for speaking Spanish.

As part of the settlement, the sheriff's office agreed to establish policies barring retaliation and rules that would govern any future workplace raids if Arpaio were to resume them.

I don't know why it's 'controversial'.

It is perfectly acceptable to have to 'show your papers' to the police.

And it is PERFECTLY acceptable every time i have to 'show my papers' to buy a gun.

I've been into stores where there are no tellers. People walk in, under the supervision of watchful cameras, and pick up what they want from the shelves, groceries or hardware, and take these items over to the "self-checkout" machines, and scan the barcodes themselves. Pack the items themselves in bags. Put in some charge card in the machine to pay, and walk out the store, all without even interacting with a single store employee.

All we need now, is facial recognition software to hook up to the pay machines, that recognizes the person, and automatically deducts the amount of money from their linked bank account, and you won't even need charge cards, nor ID cards of any kind.

We'll be able to walk about the planet freely, and pick up whatever we want, whatever we need, and the machines will tell us where we are allowed to walk, and what we can take, according to the identity and credit available to us in our bank accounts.

Wonderful world is coming.

Everyone will be "allowed "to do the things they are "allowed" to do by law. And nobody will be able to do anything "wrong".

Jails will be closed down, and police force abolished.

I'm 100% with you on this one. It doesn't matter if it makes it harder to recognize and deport illegals or not. That ruling opens the door to violations of the 4th amendment for American Citizens. No one should automatically have to show their identification to the police or any other authoritative body on demand. Someone should insert and apply the famous "freedom for security" quote by Ben Franklin.
