In my best English

Today class we shall explore the meaning of words and how they
actually sound. I want you all to provide a word that you think
sounds funny when you say it. Please ignore the heading because
funny sounding words are certainly not limited to english or England.



Now in order to make this work, we must provide the meaning of the word.
Thereby fitting to the edumacational forum and keeping the principal off our
silly student asses. Some words even sound as if they belong to the meaning.
Like:

ointment - a smooth oily preparation that is rubbed on the skin for medicinal
purposes or as a cosmetic.

Then bring about a discription of why it sounds funny to you.

ouy ouy ointment Buhahahaha!

And so it begins.

A flighty or whimsical person. Usually a young woman. Also, talkative or a gossip.

All you have to do is say the word and that explains why it's on this list!

I always thought patchouli was sort of silly sounding, not the concept, the sound.

Oh and flaming puupuu platter. That was always good for a giggle as a kid.

Bamboozle.

It means to con, to flim-flam, to deceive.
I had no idea what it meant when I first heard it spoken but it made this 5 year-old giggle. I thought my uncle had made it up but a trip to the dictionary enlightened me. It is a real word but it's one of few that has no known origin according to Funk & Wagnalls.
That uncle did make up words. On occasions which would have merited normal people saying something like, "Oh, drat!" or some less-mild oath, he would make up nonsense words.
"Frogfur and batfeathers!" was one that stuck in this kid's mind and still brings a giggle to me.

Uranus..

Seventh planet from the sun... It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System.

I Always wondered if it was an englishman giving this planet its name... and the circiumstances at the moment he did so.

It sounds so funny because when pronouncing the name to people who never knew the name can assume you are trying to warn them about a bodypart showing. Something like ... "and this planet is called...youranus.." on which they will blush and give you a troubled and quuestioning look.
