"Harmony" was a secret society founded by Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) where the initiates would learn the secrets of "animal magnetism" - a type of occult method for healing the sick.

Mesmer studied the old mystics and the other contemporary works prepared by the Rosicrucian’s and (re-?) discovered means by healing using will-power and "electric fluid". This fluid was somehow connected to the human soul, and he accumulated it by wearing a leather tunic lined with silk.

When living in Paris his house was full with people from all classes that he tried to heal, and he was even approached by the French government to reveal his secrets for a substantial monetary award. Harmony was founded since Mesmer was afraid of "grave abuse" if his occult knowledge was ever known the public.

There is a Wikipedia article on Mesmer here for those wanting to read up on his life and occult studies. There is no mention of Harmony in the Wikipedia article though, and I got that information from "A Rosicrucian Notebook" by Willy Schroder that has a chapter on Mesmer.

Does Harmony still exist today as a secret society? Is Mesmer’s animal magnetism healing still being used?

I find it interesting that Mesmer's tombstone has the All-Seeing Eye on it and is well taken care of to this very day, on the Wikipedia picture you can even see someone has placed flowers on it still 200 years after he passed. Originally, the engravings were gilded and there was a sundial and compass on the top of it.

Hm. I guess Mesmer did not know that leather is an electric insulator.

To accumulate "electric fluid" he would need to wear capacitors...

Is Mesmer’s animal magnetism healing still being used?

Probably, yes. No doubt it is very much used in some new age circles, along with qi and some other "transcendental", "unexplained" forces of nature.

We were just talking about this the other day, I didn't know it was called "Harmony" though, I thought it was "The Magnetic Lodge" or something like that.
What page is it on in the Notebook? I can't find it in my copy.
ETA: The chapter on Magnetic Healing is quite long, can't find any mention of Mesmer's Lodge, specifically...

Not sure about the secret society part.

Mesmer in my opinion was one of the first written examples of someone who discovered hypnosis/hypnotherapy.
I do not have the source bookmarked on this computer at the moment but I remember reading a while back that he believed that the human body had an electrical current that could be manipulated for healing and to create other states including trance. This of course was laughed at during his time but it always fascinated me that we now know that we do in fact have an electrical current within the human body.

Had a quick read on the wiki and find it interesting that he also claimed the moon and sun affect humans too.

S+F and bookmarked to come back later, need to dash at the moment, just adding a small tidbit

There, that's better. We don't want any misunderstandings.

In my paperback edition it is page 102 in the chapter called "What Mesmer borrowed from the Rosicrucians". The founding of Harmony is mentioned on page 104.

Very interesting that your source says that Harmony consisted of 20 lodges in 1784 internationally. Mesmer also claimed that he was a member of the Illuminati of Bavaria.

Nah I guess the giant "illuminati" symbol on his tombstone is there for no reason at all.

This is how it went best as I can ascertain;
Mesmer was an initiate of the Order of the Gold and Rosy Cross, and maybe, maybe not, a Mason.
Back in this time and in Europe, many would likely be initiated into an Order, complete a few degrees, study and read, travel, and attempt to spread and share the information, whether "officially allowed" to found new Orders or Lodges or not. It seems Mesmer met Weishaupt at a young age, and after reconnecting with him, spread Weishaupts' "Illuminati" Lodges, under the name of "Harmony," and guise of Masonry, in France.
Though not "officially" Masonic or Rosicrucian, they were modeled as such, and used but ONE aspect of Rosicrucian teachings - "touch healing" - as the basis of the teachings and studies.
The "goal" was to "level the playing field," eliminate the "rich and poor," with equal wealth distribution, and no more "doctors/patients," either - everyone has the power to heal. After the edict was issued against the Gold and Rosy Cross in Austria, Mesmer, St. Germaine, and others gathered to revive it, meeting at a large Masonic convention in Paris.
Mesmer founded the Harmony Lodges under the Masonic/Illuminati model, using the names to lend weight to his authority on such matters, ignoring (or not) Weishaupts' political intentions behind the Bavarian Illuminati. Others likely followed Weishaupts' political ideals regarding revolution. His intent was to continue his own work with healing, without exposing the method as "Rosicrucian," instead making it seem his own discovery.
For one, this attracts new members and their undivided attention to Mesmer's words.
Two, those who were already Rosicrucians or other "mystics" would know that it was not his discovery, but would attend anyway, to help in the progress.
Out of Mesmers' 20 Lodges, who can say how many were also Rosicrucians, Masons, or in direct contact with the Bavarian Illuminati? I can find no records of any of the Lodges surviving, but that's why the same works are conducted under different names, and I would guess it's likely the Lodges are still there, under different names and orders.

Exactly!
and thanks!
Searching the French spelling, I found this:
New Society for Universal Harmony

which links to this:
The New Society

The "History" timeline is great, looking forward to reading this and digging some more!

ETA: Google search of French spelling: Societies de l'Harmonie

We have a location:
Hotel de Coigny, rue Coq-Heron

and an affiliation (bottom of page):

Well the "New Society" stuff is an art project website, but she mixes in a lot of factual stuff and symbolism.
I find the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Almanac listing interesting, because it shows an active Lodge, with an address in NY, in 1906.

Hmmhmm.

Either that or it is there for an actual reason OMG!

I said it before and I will say it again to the sarcasmaholic's among us such as yourself.

Not sure about the secret society part as in, not actually aware of the whole Harmony secret society that this topic speaks about.

Please do feel free to enlighten me as to the topic at hand.
