The only locust species in the Americas was the Rocky Mountain locust. Now extinct.

Well whatever they were, they weren't grasshoppers, I don't think. They were brown. And they ate everything and got everywhere.

As far as the common observer goes, there is no difference between the two critters: grasshopper and locust. That is like the difference between corn and maze. In the US it is called corn in the rest of the world it is called maze.
