Toba emitting hot steam and gas fumes

Villagers in Toba Samosir, North Sumatra, are troubled by unusual events. The ground beside the houses is steaming hot and smelling like gas.

Suspected hazardous vapors appeared on Wednesday, May 27, in the yard beside a house about ten kilometers (6 miles) from Balige, the Toba Samosir regency capital.

“Hot steam and smelling like gas coming out of the pores of the soil it is feared to threaten the safety of people around, so we report them to the government,” said the resident, Purasa Silalahi in Sitoluama, Saturday, May 30.

The temperature around the house has been very hot, both day and night, for the past three weeks, said Purasa. In fact, the ceramic floors in the house feel hot.

“Steam and smell make us feel fear gas that can be burned, so that the findings are reported directly to the head of the local village,” explained Purasa.

Village Head Sitoluama, Moppo Old Pangaribuan said hot steam disturbing residents had been reported to the Department of Environment Toba Samosir.

Toba is the big bad one that nearly did for the human race some 75,000 years ago. More than double the size of the Yellowstone eruption at about 2,500 cubic kilometres IF this was to erupt at the same level the Georgia Guidestones would possibly get their wish as there would be a serious depletion of the world population.

a couple of years ago an ATS member with direct knowledge of the area mentioned to me that there was considerable concern at the time about the rising temperature of the lake. I will try and dig out the exact conversation details.

Also of note is the massive resurgent dome which is about 450m above the caldera floor I believe. Again I will try and find some details.

So what is your take on this? I know you study volcanic activity and seismology all over the place from your threads. Are you thinking we may see some serious activity coming from this giant soon?

I'm with Vasa on this, knowing how and what you put into this topic, I'd dearly like to hear your thoughts on what the possibilities are. I expect TA to pop in as well because I know he's probably got live feeds from there on his rig and would have some insight as well.

Toba is honest to goodness doomporn that needs no hyping whatsoever and is so much more likely than nearly any of the other scenarios often cooked up under tinfoil.

Geologically speaking maybe, however there is insufficient activity seismically at this time to suggest anything imminent in human time. Earthquake activity both in the caldera and in the general area of Toba are what I would call 'normal' showing no spikes in activity.

Having said that I don't think we know what sort of activity Toba displays before erupting. I may be old but I am not that old

The increase in temperature of the lake is a concern but not a major problem until it gets too hot for comfort or the fish start dying. Maybe in a thousand years.............who knows!

ETA: I am putting it back on my watch list however and will take a look at it more frequently. I also intend contacting Aromaz to see if he has any updates on the situation.

A thousand years is good for me....

Why would it be worrisome if the area got so hot that the fish died? Does heat mean an eruption is imminent? So if we hear of fish dying off there, is that time to start worrying or could it also subside from that point?

The June 6 eruption of Mount Sinabung, about 25 miles from the Lake Toba, came after the late May reports about Toba.
Dutchsinse reports that the authorities in Western Indonesia have issued an alert due to fears that Mount Sinabung could produce a “mega-eruption.”
The Indonesian government ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents in the area around Mt. Sinabung after scientists warned that a major eruption could occur.

The Sinabung alert was raised to the highest level amid government fears that the growing lava dome could collapse at any moment.

Mount Sinabung has erupted intermittently since late 2013.

Not sure how much this would affect mt Toba if at all - but 25 miles seems very close - could it be feeding from the same deep magma?

Humanities number one goal should be to spread out into our solar system. It is beyond arogant of us to think we are somehow protected from earth's extinction events. It's not even "if" it will happen it is the question of "when".

We going to just sit here and die off? When we know we could spread out if we decided to put our mind and resources toward that?

Maybe it could unite many of us into something that would reduce the friction between civilized Nations.

Toba could esily end us all by nightfall.

If an increase in water temperature to that extent occurred either accompanied by or followed by increased seismic activity in the lower magnitude ranges it could be an indicator of magma moving closer to the surface.

I agree we should'nt have to leave this planet, and it's being watched over any way and they have so much advanced technology they could clean this planet up and its oceans too so don't worry about that earth is safe and so too is the population when the time comes although it's going to be a rocky ride for a while, I have been told that the pole shift is not going to happen so we can stop worrying about that one and as for the propaganda BS on the 2.5 mile commet that's going to hit in September this is a false flag for whatever is going to happen they are up to something we'll just have to wait and see won't we

But it moving closer to the surface doesn't necessarily mean eruption correct? It could just be building up? At what point does worry happen? I would guess, from my limited knowledge, that it would be when there is a large uplift in the area or something of that nature?

There already is large uplift in the form of the dome, however yes a change in uplift velocity would be an indicator. More likely indicator would be volcanic tremor which can last from minutes to days and would probably be caused by magma on the move, or by steam escaping and secondly the appearance and/or increase of long period earthquakes - see here for an explanation of the two earthquake types at a volcano.
