I am a Swede, i promise you we arent that friendly as we look. =)
now that may not be quite true. There ha e been large flybys in recent years which were blocked by the light from the sun. I'm not the doom porn type but even I won't claim that they or any astronomers could never miss a potential disaster because their records show they can and do miss them.

There are many talented amateur astronomers all over the world. If a large meteor or asteroid was on a collision course with us in September they would have spotted it by now. There are also thousands of professional astronomers. why would they all remain silent if such a catastrophe was approaching? It would be absolutely impossible to keep a lid on something like this. stop worrying about nonsense...

I think you missed the point. No one said they NEVER miss objects, only that there is a world-wide, collaborative effort to discover, track and monitor Near Earth Objects, and because of the huge number of people involved, they couldn't keep it a secret if anything was on a collision course with Earth.

Because it IS going to hit and NASA wanted to get in front of the line for all the doom shelters and get all the bread and milk before the masses panic.
Obviously.

Crap.
How early should I go to the store?
I'm thinking a week.
I mean this is way bigger than a predicted 2'' snowfall.
