I think it's the pacific plate that's gradually moving half an inch a year towards the coastline. I'm not sure

I'm near the Juan de fuca subduction zone. I think it's that plate that would get pushed under if there was a major EQ . For that reason I do avoid going to vancouver island! I read it could slide under.

So if it's constantly moving the energy isn't building right? Or wrong?

I notice quakes are increasing in strength. It's seems 10 years ago a biggie was 6.5 , now those are the norm for a large quake

They can't save their own citizens in Yemen (Russia has to step up to the plate and do that at great risk, bet you don't see that in the news much over there).

Is there a place where we can see other Countries assistance help in these matters? The global response? Who is doing what, supplying what.


I bet there will be a slew of charities and TV adverts and we sites demanding money (donations) which of course 90% goes to "management".

Last I heard it was only India helping. Not really had a chance to keep up much this weekend though.

Why do the Americans not jump in with their fancy military? They were able to do food drops for the Kurds.

Whilst one can never be certain it would seem to indicate that another major quake is unlikely in that area.

Seismic Area 309 however, the Nepal-India border region it is a different story. That may have enough energy stored for a Mag 8 now, and this set of events could have made a contribution.

Many countries pledge money, but don't release all the cash right away, sometimes not even close to fulfilling their pledge when it gets right down to it. Haiti's earthquake is one example. There are still tons of people (a million or two) still living in the tent city refugee camps. It could be a numbers PR game for all we know.

What people need versus how difficult it is to send in planes to Nepal carrying heavy equipment and medical supplies, water purification equipment, is being assessed at the moment. Canada has a heavy plane military DART team always at the ready that could be sent in, but Nepal must request it and figure out where they need them to go versus how they get into remote mountainous regions. It is literally one hellish nightmare, given that it's an ongoing precarious situation.

This picture from Agence France Presse needs no further words from me. It brings home the reality of their situation as they go about the cremations in Kathmandu.

If you google any famous or semi-famous person, you will see their profile immediately, not him however. Now he doesn't have an accent(not all Nordics speak with an accent), however, he does seem pretty tall and his voice is very deep.

The reason I'm posting this is to me, Google has always been remarkably innovative and efficient(to be able to answer just one of those conversion questions would take so much time that to me, it's not humanly possible to do it without advanced technology). To me, to be safe, the Indian government should keep his body, until his family arrived and they are able to verify that it's his family(interestingly, his sister is able to access his Facebook).

Thanks Puterman for that input. I totally ignored we have a quake watch thread. I was wondering where are the experts. I think the method applied is the best we have now in earthquake prediction. Somehow, it can predict future events. Unfortunately, it can tell you "where", but not "when".

The Mag. 8.0 in Peru in 2007 was officially predicted by Hernando Tavera, Director of the Geophysical Institute of Peru. Sadly, the government didn't listen the warning. 500 people died. He was interviewed after the earthquake. I'm sorry, it's in spanish.

There has been a connection between this and earthquakes. Japan's citizens were very worried about another earthquake. Could this have been the one?

Yeah I think the climbers and people living in EQ or Volcano areas should start listening to BPearthwatch. He warned everyone, people just do not listen! The big sun spots aiming at earth and what Cern is doing to remove our natural protection made this possible and I would expect more soon. The first time I seen a picture of CERN I had a sinking feeling that it was way, way too much money and time spent just for research. BP has done a great job proving CERN has one very evil agenda.
