As far as I've noticed, this has been an increasing trend in the last 10-15 years... My question is, was it already happening before that, and I was just too young/blind to notice, or has it really been clamped down on "lately"?

With hundreds of millions of added humans online in the last couple of years, the influence of major media dropping, and internet connected camera carrying, cell phones everywhere it became the most important spying focus for the governments and the corporations that grew up around them. It was always going on it is just that innovation is getting close to hampering snooping by the spooks. Can't have that now can we.
