Why does ATS asking for donations bother you?

If I'm invited to a friends for a BBQ, they are super happy if I bring an extra pack of snags, or a bottle of wine. I don't have to, it's just a nice gesture if you're able to do it. I don't see ATS asking for donations as a big thing, heck it's better than letting it go under because of stupid google's policies and massive script attacks.

With over 3-thousand post you appear to enjoy the service that ATS provides and it is free of charge. There are numerous websites that charge, other which do the same in asking for a a gift to defray cost. I am certain that adverting doesn't begin to cover the cost of the service so why not ask for a gift...you are not under any obligation so how does it hurt you ?

There are other sites totally devoted to people asking for "handouts" as you put it to make their dreams come true in the form of inventions and ideas and in some cases nothing but a need. Again you are under no obligation so it can't be that troublesome to you, but to get attention you post a thread about it and call even more attention to the opportunity to give a gift for a service.

If it really bothers you that much make your attempt to find another site with similar services and when they grow as big as ATS, I doubt that they will offer the service for free but its your choice, its still a free service either way.

I have found ATS to be educational and informative. I donated without hesitation.

N.B.

The ONLY thing that stops me making a contribution to this site financially is a lack of liquid asset from which to make such donation. But for that, I would make every effort to throw money at ATS because this place is fantastic, it is run by good people, and has afforded me with the opportunity to learn, to speak, to write and to commune with a great myriad of minds of note and worth.

That is a very valuable thing in my life, and if I were not a pauper in all meaningful respects, then I would surely put some money toward keeping the site running, relevant, and safe.

How many of us that come to ATS every day--usually multiple times a day--would have a Hell of a hole in our lives if the site disappeared? It would be as if a friend had died and the feeling of loss would not pass quickly or, for that matter, be easily transferred to some other site. THERE IS NO OTHER COMPARABLE SITE!

I completely agree with what you have just said.

I would have probably been put in the loony bin if not for this site, since I can actually engage with deep thinking as part of its membership, and discuss topics which folk who live in my area generally either know nothing about, or care for not one iota.

Here, I can talk physics, astronomy, discuss politics and religion, ethics and morality, actually USE my mind for more than walking, breathing, working, and eating. It is invaluable, priceless to me, to have that in my life.

That was the source of my "wow" post.

But, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Personally, if it was me and I went from enjoying this community to disliking it I just wouldn't donate. Not really sure why the swipes at us were necessary.

It shouldn't bother you. If you can't afford to donate like myself, then don't donate. You aren't being forced. This is the best site ever and I call it home.
