Seven people were shot, five of them fatally after a gunman opened fire in the street in Douglas County, west of Atlanta. Local police said the victims included children, and that the gunman apparently shot himself and was taken to hospital.

Douglas County Sheriff's Lt. Glenn Daniel told AP that the shooting took place in Douglasville at around 3pm Saturday. Alarmed residents made a 911 call reporting a gunman shooting people in the street.

Opeth could not be reached for comment....

Hopefully this one doesn't die, maybe we can hear about some motive for this senseless loss of life.

Looks like we won't get that chance.

Close to home. Very close. Ugh I hate it when this happens.

Motives? What are the usual motives? Loss of hope or family or job? Drugs? Robbery?

WSB-TV News Twitter saying the shooter is dead, along with two other adults and two kids:

UPDATE: Coroner confirms shooter is dead in Douglas Co. incident. 2 adults and 2 juveniles also dead: 2wsb.tv... More at 11.

Residents identified the shooter's sister as she we being escorted by police.

Fernandes [the reporter] said the shooter's sister was frantic and witnesses say she repeatedly yelled, "My brother should have never had a gun."

Wonder what that's about.

I have never been able to understand the mind set of someone who would just stand out in the street, shooting people at random. I'm not sure I want to. I've had bed things happen if my life, but I've never thought hurting someone else would solve it.

You reap what you sow America!

All your mindless nonsense about deadly fire arms being there to protect yourselves - never seems to stop any of these massacres. It just shows your society is too messed up to be responsible with guns, hell I'd even go one step further and say your a danger to yourselves and others when your holding a potato peeler.

I hope the pour souls who lost family members recover from this trauma - it must be horrible to lose a family member for no reason by a senseless maniac who's obsessed with weapons and his ego driven desire to shoot bullets!

And to think all those mindless gun laws did nothing to stop it.

Nor did that law that says x can't go around shooting or harming someone else.

And the police was no where to be found, but after the fact.

Why yes the bill of rights, the second amendment, as well of the rest of those LAWS.

Are some kind of existential threat to others now aren't they?

That is not your call to make, or the states, or anyone's next door neighbors.

Amazing that there are some out there that think it's ok to willfully violate the civil liberties of American gun owners.

On topic now:

Only on ATS will someone political troll an event such as the op.

May those people rest in peace.

ahh cry me a river..

Your gun laws are the reason your society endures massacre after massacre after massacre. Add in a touch if below par education systems, a dash of chemically enhanced fast food, a serve of medication and top it off with endless TV violence and you have a recipe for nutjobs shooting up innocent people including children

but if your naive enough to believe washing your society with deadly - war zone like weapons is in no way responsible for the endless gun massacres occurring - then your part of the problem!

Apparently your not so ignorant to recognise that this is not "gun" issue, or you wouldn't have mentioned the potato peeler. It's an enormous emotional issue... nothing more and nothing less. Guns just happen to be the expedient means with which to live out that aggression.

Without guns, it would be a knife or a bat or a tire iron. If you think guns hold a specific sway over human nature to release aggression, your sadly mistaken.

Humans found ways of killing long before the advent of firearms, and will continue to do so as long as there are humans. It's the nature of the " beast". I don't mean to belittle any act of violence but like it or not it is human nature. Until we as individuals, grow internally beyond the need to express our emotions in a violent way, we will be subject to the heinous acts of those that have no control.

Look to the source, not the symptom!

Would you be saying the same thing if the person was pushing the other side of that coin?

Tragic day to hear that kids lost their life for no reason.
My thoughts to the families.

This seems to be happening more frequently here in GA, or maybe just being reported? Something is infecting us (psychologically), and I have have my own theories which I've previously shared.

I mean, recently we have had: the guy who killed the elderly couple in the craigslist thing; the step sibling who killed his deputy father, mother, siblings; now this; the bodies found in the house just a few days ago; and a few other things I can't recall.

Yep, sure would.

That's why I said "their politics" and not "their anti-gun agenda." Because both actions are equally disgusting.

Well, your guns are there to protect you? that's your whole position on why they're legal.

Yet, looking at the past 5yrs it seems all your guns have done is murder your innocent children and neighbours.

This is just another sad case of your lax gun laws allowing psychopaths easy access to weapons to murder innocent people.

You don't need to believe - hell I don't really care if you do or don't. The proof is in the pudding. Look at all the other nations on the world and what their massacre statistics are like.

your all to scared to admit that guns in America and their easy access is a problem - because those weapons you keep in your basement make you feel like a man..

'' oohrah! got me a weapon that can brutally murder dozens of people in a matter of minutes. I say its for protection but i honestly just like the smell of gunpowder in the morning ''

Take your political ideology to the Forums button at the top of the page a make a thread.

Stop littering these tragic events with your nonsense beliefs that we all hear ad nauseam every f#ing day.

RIP.

Hopefully they find out soon what caused this.
