Search engine does not seem to work on my cell phone so I am forced to ask. I got a friend that says that the European Union is actually a Communist project to remove America's influence on Europe by creating a group to antagonize NATO, and that Gorbachev was instrumental in the crafting of the TEU. Does anybody have any info on this?

Other than that the EU is not communist nope, no further information.

Historically it was basically one big trade agreement but its slowly turning into one massive state, there are some communist influences, and even more right wing influences but as a whole it is not "communist". Some might even say its the exact opposite because it exists as a economic-political union whose original goal was to enhance trade between members and promote economic growth.

I think it is more capitalist than communist.

On the issue of trying to remove American influence that is also untrue, I am pretty sure i am correct in saying that the USA is the largest trading partner with the EU and most of the EU member states are also NATO members with strong ties to America.

I think your "friend" needs to do some more research.

Most of the members of the EU are in NATO, so, no, this is all gibberish.

Paranoia.
We are really a mixture of things, if something works, we go for it, and don't bother with the labels associated to it.
Our health care is often viewed as socialist, and we do not care, because people are not left to die in the middle of the street. So it's fine with us.
Some people, mostly in america, just want to create the "America is a pillar for justice and fairness throughout the world!"
Don't get dragged into that mud

I don't think it is Communist per se and not created for the reasons you are offering up. If anything the U.S now has the whole of Europe as an ally and there is so much business carried out between the U.S and Europe.

Yet, it is a very worth while comparison to make as it has, in my opinion, become such a lumbering bureaucratic beast. The Euro was a bad idea and as yet is still causing economic chaos in the EU. I think the individual members performed much better with their own currencies. That was a means by which individual nations' economies could be adjusted and mended on an individual level without affecting the whole. Hope that makes sense.

Also, there is the constant repetitive gripe I have with the Commission members having power with no true democratic accountability.

Finally, there is what I believe to be a very Marxist and insidious blanket control of the work environment. If I am truthful I feel it has isolated more eccentric people like me. There is not a lot of room for personality and diversity in the work environment. It has been made void of all those little things that count as life, colour, imagination; too sterile in my opinion. I struggle enormously with the modern working environment. Even in Schools these days only certain hair cuts are allowed here in the UK; stifling individuality, expression and non conformity. How can the healthy new come out of the old with all these mechanisms of control and manipulation? Too controlled, we are encouraged to be control "freaks".

If you live in a large city, you live in the largest social engineered "community" in the world. The world over is filled with these socially engineered communes. The biggest social welfare act ever was the US government big bank and big business bailout of 2008.

The Russians aren't any different than anywhere else on the planet. The people at the top need us to be divided so they can further their aims of world conquest. People rail about socialism, but seem ignorant that mass transit, public schools, fire and police departments are all social programs they can't 'live without'.

Everywhere Earth has top down governments, big banks, standing armies and now, endless war… hooray for "our side".

Your friend needs to go an do some research.

The EU is made up of 28 counties with a combined GDP that is greater than the US. All members of the EU are liberal democracies, although some are more liberal than others. There are no communists states in the EU. Your friend is probably confusing the term socialist and communist. People in the US tend to think anything that is social (i.e. socialist) is communist, but that level of misunderstanding shows the difference between the EU and the US.

Many recognise that the EU is becoming too "controlling" and increasingly unrepresentative and this is shown in recent elections where anti-EU parties are collecting votes. However, the EU is a force for good and people who live within its borders are diverse and liberal.

Communist = No

What is today the EU began to form around trade agreements between France and West Germany. One motivation for those trade agreements was to counterbalance the economic system of the Soviet Union and its satellite states.

In other words, the EU has its roots in capitalist endeavours to ensure free movement of goods and services around Europe. Not exactly what I would have thought Communist agenda.

Hehe, no... it's not a communist project.

But first, why is it you think that the US should have an influence on Europe? The US is not the center of Earth, nor will it ever be. There are two solutions, either mind your own business or make sure that everyone in the world has the same rights and the same access to food and so on.

Now, the EU original was started as the EF, which was a trading federation. It was told to be beneign in the sense that it was all about economic politcs and making trading easier amongst member states.
But I remember reading once that the father of the EF was very much aware of the mentality of the common folk;

Feed them the change in small bits, then they will eat it all eventually, as opposed to coming right out and stating that we should make a US 2.0 over here. People would be outraged.
So the "founding fathers" of the EF had every little bit a wish of making the EU into a United States of Europe, they just couldn't say it out loud.

People in the EU still believes that their individual constitutions mean anything....... which just goes to show that the EF fathers were right.

So chunk by chunk they incorporated more and more into the business of the EU, to the point now where we actually have an EU president and a general commisioner of the EU assembly. More or less like you have in the US.

With each year more and more affairs are being taken of the hands of the member states and handed over to centralization in the EU.
In other cases where corporate interests win by spinning and lobbying (like the case of Monsanto) member states are left to themselves to fight of these rogue companies.
This is a mechnism of showing the free choice of democracy but not really giving us a choice.

So in that way, the EU is very much a corporate tool trying to appear as a democratic base.

Sure, we elect the members of assembly, but in the end we have no real say in what goes on. Small countries will suffer under the wishes of larger countries and thus the EU is an organism which you can't live with and can't survive without.

Our best hope is that they push us too much to the point where we actually go medieval on their ass and make them suffer for the lack of alligiance to the people instead of big corps.

So shortly... to answer your question, the EU is if any label is needed a corporate democracy.

The EU has all kinds within it but is majorly comprised of Socialists and Liberals.

Brussels on the other hand is aiming for Federalism. Every year, it's the need for closer integration to make it work. Every year they pass laws which every country must obey. A single United States of Europe will be a reality within the next few decades unless something is able to derail it.

European Union is communist?

Close perhaps, but more like a "Social Democracy"

Social democracy is a political ideology that officially has as its goal the establishment of democratic socialism through reformist and gradualist methods. Alternatively, social democracy is defined as a policy regime involving a universal welfare state and collective bargaining schemes within the framework of a capitalist economy. It is often used in this manner to refer to the social models and economic policies prominent in Western and Northern Europe during the later half of the 20th century.

Similarities......

The Fabian Society is a British socialist organization whose purpose is to advance the principles of socialism via gradualist and reformist means.[1][2] The society laid many of the foundations of the Labour Party and subsequently affected the policies of states emerging from the decolonisation of the British Empire, most notably India and Singapore.

Originally, the Fabian society was committed to the establishment of a socialist economy, alongside a commitment to British imperialism as a progressive and modernizing force.

Excellent post! Agree 100%

Maybe your friend is using Communist when he/she means Socialist? Many countries in the EU are about as 'Socialist' as you can find in a functioning democracy nowadays.

Both the EU and the US are defacto communist nations. In fact the US communist party, once funded by the soviet union was essentially absorbed into the US democratic party. Their platforms were identical. The US communist party has endorsed the democratic candidate for the last few elections.

www.independentsentinel.com...

It's the slow boil of the frog. Most of our citizens are absolutely clueless and do not understand the freedoms they have lost, nor the terrible economic straitjacket they are operating under. There are only a few countries that have anything resembling economic freedom.

Ironically it's easier to start a business in many of the former communist countries, now that they have embraced fascism.

You can tell your friend that every citizen of all 28 members states of the EU spend every waking minute and hour at work looking for ways to turn America into a huge Communist state.

Our hatred for your people burns so strong that every action that will happen today in Europe will be designed to undermine American freedom.

We look forward to meeting your friend, comrade.

A specter is haunting Europe - the specter of communism.
Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?

Communism is like Islam, it can be good if not taken to the extreme.
