How can you comprehend the vastness of the universe and of consciousness and still go on to continue thinking that anything you do really matters from a non karmic/ etheric perspective?

Does anything really matter? Everything we do and will do on this earth and in this universe will be destroyed, the physical memory of it will be destroyed. We are stuck on an infinite life/death loop with no hope for escape.

You've been listening to country music again, haven't you??

It does matter. Hurt someone's feelings, look into their eyes and tell someone that it doesn't matter. Feed a homeless man who hasn't eaten in a week, look into his eyes and tell someone it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter how long anything matters does it? But it does matter in the "now" and that is what matters right now.

I have been in existential crisis since I learned to speak. I now realize it is all just a cosmic joke to which consciousness is the punchline, either you get it or you don't, either way its usually best to laugh anyway.

Many times, the things we do change another persons energy (soul), in a positive or negative way. Energy never dies. Therefore, all the things we do that effect the thoughts and actions of others, which in turn effects their energy (soul), .... matter.

When what I do matters to people around me and to myself, it is enough.

I do not need to accomplish things that are great in the scale of the universe or comparable to the works of the Great Spirit for my putterings to be meaningful.

Everything you do matters. You are your universe.

(Yes, I just watched The Egg.)

Seriously, though, everything you do does matter...to you, to those around you, to the universe. Things can't all be grand gestures or show an immediate reward (in the sense that you realize then and there that something you did mattered).

Of course none of it matters! That's what's so liberating. You're then free to choose your own path, create your own system, follow your own perspectives, consciously direct your own course in life. If for nothing else, then the fact that life is boring without awe, mystery, curiosity, and growth. Do I seem to contradict myself? This information wasn't for you then.. no worries... because, of course, it doesn't really matter, anyways.

Someone posted that in another thread today. I had read the story but never seen the video before. Seems kind of appropriate here.

In the end, it doesn't matter.

But it wouldn't be much of a game if everyone knew that.

One key part of your sentence is "from a non-karmic/etheric perspective." In other words, from a spiritual point of view, no?

What we do here matters as far as our own journey and the immediate journey of those around us - that is the personal level of our values and meanings. On one level, nothing material matters if you count its death as the destruction of all meaning, on another, everything matters, because everything is One Thing, and so, we affect everything at all times.

In other words, time, and the seeming rise and fall of life, nations, worlds, universes, is an illusion - it is ALL HAPPENING RIGHT NOW - past and present and future and all possibilities made manifest at once. Take out "time" and there is no destruction, only the endless now of any given eternal moment. In that moment we choose whether the heart prevails in goodness or evil, whether we grow or recede, whether we succeed or fail... It is ALL story - it is all consciousness - and it ALL matters. Or not.
lol! It depends on how one frames meaning, on how one sees the story of life and death.

I don't know if I'm being even remotely clear with this, so I beg patience. I almost didn't post because I know I am bumbling around smashing into the Archetypes and ham-fistedly attempting to explain the ineffable.

ps - this is a gut reaction from me based on what I know, but what I also know is that I know very little in this wide wide world, and so my words may be mere meaningless shadows...

It is my default.
There is no proof of a hereafter.
I have nothing to prove.
If anyone believes that there is something after life, it is up to them to prove it.

Even if one strives to promote the existence of the human race in the absence of afterlife, it is doomed to failure. Nothing lasts forever.

Hope I didn't bring anyone down.

Another great thread from you and some fantastic answers!

Some things we do don't matter. But most does. I mean, we are stardust. Of course what we do matters.

Way I see it. technically a lot we do matters, at the rate we are going with technology and knowledge being passed down from generation to generation we can in a way make a difference in the 'universe' we all live in.
Remember the saying, what we do in life and echo and eternity, look at Newtons discoveries, just a simple thought process lead to an entire field of science that has lead to thousands of intellectuals on the path of truth and discovery of how the universe around us works.
But on a personal level, everything you do effects those directly involved with you, and them to you, a conversation with someone means something, which can lead to another, and so on. Every event is connected, just look at the supposed beginnings of the universe, if the leading theory of the big bang were true, then think of how it went from that, to me flapping my fingers on this keyboard communicating with all these people who decide to read this thread, because you started it.

Does anything really matter?

The things you do may matter much more than you ever could realize, it cant be known for sure. But why not be open to let things be as they are and the benefits reach wide and far.

A river doesn't need a reason to run.

You say that nothing matters but the truth is that your perception is that nothing matters since that's all consciousness is.

A river doesn't need a reason to run and I don't need to be the center of the universe to sleep, eat, #, and have sex with my gf. If I choose to perceive more or to learn more then that's fine, but my heart will beat nonetheless.

Also there's no indication that I'm more or less important than anything else in the universe. In that vein of thought, the moment I started breathing on my own when I was an infant could be akin to my own personal big bang. The beginning of my own personal universe.
