Today most young adults are living with their girlfriends or boyfriends. Why bother getting married or as they say,... "buy the cow when you get the milk for free?"

Marriage is also a sign of commitment.

That is what I always believed and after over 30 years of marriage, my husband decided he didn't want to be married anymore. Legally we are still married and living together and still get along. Marriage is no guarantee of anything when one takes the other for granted or whatever.

Yeah that sucks. Married 20 years myself and all 20 have been great.
still I think most people look at marriage as a commitment. He didn't stay for 30 years on a whim. Unfortunately sometimes people can drift apart. I know a few married couples that should be divorced, and I can't figure out why they want to be in misery all the time. People are hard to figure out.

Marriage can be very tough at times because you have to deal with real emotions.....and lawyers.

3 marriages, 3 divorces....

My first mother in law begged her daughter not to marry me but she didn't listen.

Now that my first wife and the subsequent 2 others and myself have all become friends and lovers again; what a great time we have.
edit on 5-1-2015 by olaru12 because: (no reason given)

I think part of the difference in many women's and men's brains (not all, I'm referring to a large percentage), is that women focus more upon relation, men on object.
This means relationships interest them more, and they can even feel that relationships are an essential part of ones happiness in general- perhaps even more important than objects one can possess.

This is also a prevalent view in more socialistic cultures, by the way....

But my question has been why marriage is seen as the only acceptable form of commitment to a relationship, in the US?
It has to be legal and official for it to be real commitment?

I guess it's a religious thing at the base.

I was at a family dinner with a girlfriend and her mother asked when we were going to give her a grand child. I told my girlfriend to go in and throw the coats off the bed and I'd be right in.

At another family dinner with a different girl friend, the mother asked why I wasn't married yet. I replied that when I found a woman who could suck the pimento through the small end of an olive, I would marry her. The mother, my girlfriend and her sister all tried.

Sometimes, I wonder why no woman has ever snatched me up LOL.
