Someone say survival of the fittest/natural selection? If only it was of those greedy people causing these animals to go extinct.

Efforts will now be made to keep the species alive through in vitro fertilization. That experiment could take place with a southern white rhino surrogate mother. Southern white rhinos almost went extinct at the end of the 19th century, plunging down to only 20 at one point. Decades of conservation efforts gradually brought them back to life.

All hopes to that.

Hey Kanga, yes we are a dangerous species.
We clearly pose a threat to all that exists with us.

I have not completely lost faith in humanity,
and yet I cannot understand how some of us
would rather eat an extinction level species
rather than take efforts to perpetuate it.

Due to the fact that there are those of the " well to do"
of us who clearly have had the means and capabilities
to intervene before a species becomes reduced to Five.

It completely boggles my logic, and hurts my heart.

At the current rate of consumption,
and the finite amount of resources,
it appears to be inevitable.

It is just a matter of time.
Unless of course, some very difficult
decisions are made regarding the habits
of Humanity.

It depends on the point of view.
I believe we as Humanity need to be kicked
in the ass, and take some personal
responsibility for our own actions.

Instead of acting like a bunch of unintelligent
myopic spoiled brats.

God forbid that kick in the ass comes swiftly
rather than over the next decade or three.

Thanks for the reply.

Angalifu died yesterday. This leaves only
5 remaining that officials know about.

Sort of makes you wonder what the next animal the Chinese will choose to grind up in to magical penis powder.

Not when there is a serious poaching problem with said species.
It's not the natural environment that is killing them, it is men that want their horn.

f that was actually the case don't you think they would be protected and in a preserve? Really? Seriously? Come on...

The "Dumbing Down" methods of Education and
False Importance needs to come to an end.

Certain Religions should be accountable
for promoting irresponsible parenthood
over the quality of life of the child.

So, is it 5 in Captivity, or 5 remaining on Earth?
Please correct me if my Thread is in Error.

By The Way, Welcome to ATS.
Great member name you drummed up.

Cheers

My Title may be Incorrect.
There is a question as to 5 White Rhinos
left on earth, compared to 5 White Rhinos in captivity.

So I looked at these Statistics from the San Diego Zoo:

Why all the bleeding heart posts? Species go extinct all the time. While these rhinos are endangered, there is nothing about them that helped the world out...they were just white rhinos.

What about every other animal that has gone extinct? Eventually they all do, but they give rise to another. It's the circle of life people!

I understand plenty will say humans are the cause, but if humans weren't around, some animal somewhere would have taken a liking to white rhino flavor and done the same.

Seriously, new species of wildlife are discovered all the time...one going extinct is not some crazy thing.

And on the topic of humans going the same way...doubtful...since the 1960's we have more than doubled our earth population. The only thing that could wipe us out are massive volcano, massive space rock and some sort of fast spreading, easily contagious disease. Outside of that, we are here as long as roaches.

ETA...or it could go the way of the wild west and we wipe eachother out I guess.

Actually, they taste delicious.
The problem lies with managing them
in herds as are done with cattle.
Considering the gestation period of
cattle is approx. 284 days or so.
While the gestation period of a female
white Rhino is 1.5 years.

White Rhinos take up to 6 years to be
mature for breeding, while cattle only
take 1 to 2 years for breeding.

Shame on you. Your idiocy is apparent.
Just buy yourself a new set of sneakers
and forget all about the world around you.

Yes, I have concerns regarding you,
and No, this is not a case of "Natural Selection".

This is a case of "Unnatural Irresponsibility".

As a naturalist, I am quite keen on the ways of nature.
For instance, underneath that beautiful field that is so
pleasing to your eye, there exist all out war and brutality,

Particularly among the insects.

Killing to survive is quite different than killing
for a trophy , or in this case, a horn.

Thanks for typing.
