There is an apparent hostage situation in central Sydney, with several people seen in a café with their hands in the air, and an Islamic State flag in the window.

3 News Australia Correspondent Tom McRae, who is based in Channel 7's headquarters across the road, says he could see at least three people with their hands against the windows of the Lindt Chocolat Café on Martin Pl.

Police are swarming over the area and newsroom staff have been told to move away from the windows, as they look directly over to the café.

This is breaking news – more to come.

Don't know yet , we were just watching channel 7 morning show when it happened . The 7 studio is directly across from the café .

Forgive me! As an American, I do recall many of your country men bashing my country for it's gun laws. I am not truly trying to be a smart ass, but, "being held up" in the US means guns are involved.

Just curious, as to how this could be possible.........?????

No not at all.

There are more restrictions than in the US, but there's plenty of legally owned guns - although the NRA might like you to believe otherwise.
