the fighting whites/whities

thought this was interesting since there has been hoopla about sports teams mascots and logo's.

The Fighting Whites (alternatively identified as Fightin' Whites, Fighting Whities, or Fightin' Whities) were an intramural basketball team formed at the University of Northern Colorado in 2002 and named in response to the Native American mascot controversy.[1]

The intramural college team briefly attracted a storm of national attention because of its satirical protest about stereotypes of Native Americans being used as sports mascots

The intramural team, which included players of Native American, white, and Latino ancestry,[3][4] adopted the name "Fighting Whites", with an accompanying logo of a stereotypical "white man" in a suit

The plan to insult whites in the same way the minority students perceived Native Americans being insulted backfired on the group when the team's popularity skyrocketed. In response to customer demand, the team eventually began selling shirts under both names. The team added the phrase "Fighting the use of Native American stereotypes" to its merchandise to discourage the shirts from being worn by white supremacists

Well, since the word "white" isn't really a racial slur, I can see why their plan backfired. Now, if they were to have called themselves "the Fighting White Racists", they may have gotten more of a negative reaction.

Popularity skyrocketed because...well, it's funny. And non-PC.

Put those together and the average person will appreciate it. I know I do. I'd buy the t-shirt. I shave my head, too, so I bed I'd get extra odd glances as I walked around.

It just proves that some people are too sensitive and insecure about their ethnicity.
I can`t think of any name that would cause a lot of white people to complain.I guess "white" people just aren`t as sensitive and insecure about being "white" as some people think.
if there were no sports teams named after native americans they would complain about that too.

If you are offended by a name it`s probably because you identify to closely to that name.

Should have named the team the "Creepy Crackers", and used an obese slob as a mascot.

What if they were called "The Fighting Racists", with logo of a white person lynching a black person? Would you have bought a truck load of those shirts?

To be fair, The Washington Redskins logo is of a noble native american in a traditional headdress.

If the logo were instead of a drunk native american at a casino, I'd say your analogy is accurate.

Fair enough, I'll grant you that. So, they're called "The Fighting Racists", with a logo of a noble 1950's style white guy. Do you think that would offend any white people?

These idiots obviously have no understanding of anything. Racism is in intention. Naming the team this was intended as an insult. It was racist. The original teams named after native americans were not intended as insults, but as tributes. So this university is the racist culprit in this.

None of the sports teams named for native americans imply that they are racist or savages or anything insulting.
Cleveland Indians, Atlanta braves, Washington redskins, see nothing racist about those names.
The army names all it`s helicopters after indian tribes.

"Braves" is not a racial slur. "Indians" is not a racial slur. Names of tribes are not racial slurs.

"Redskin" is a racial slur. There is a certain poster right here on ATS who is Asian and who is offended by the term "yellow- skin".

If the team owners mean no offense, then they should be happy to change the team name once they heard that many native Americans were offended.
