In a move that many will welcome...
Or detest, depending on your Partisan leanings...
More Guantanamo Bay detainees will be freed next month.

The number of detainees to be released hasn't been revealed yet, nor their nationalities.

The Pentagon is preparing to transfer more detainees from Guantanamo Bay in coming weeks despite continued Republican opposition, according to defense and congressional officials.

The controversial Detention Centre has been a thorny issue, President Obama still inclined to close the Centre as per his pre-election Policy.

The transfers come shortly after the announcement of the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who was criticized by administration officials who spoke to The Wall Street Journal for moving too slowly to certify detainees for release.

The releases will not go down well with Republicans who have been vehemently against such actions.

It also sheds a little light on former Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel's resignation...

NPR Source.

Seven low-level detainees have been moved from Guantanamo to other nations this month, bringing the number of inmates being held there down to 142. More than half of them are also approved for some kind of transfer.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon said continuing such releases was unwise. At a recent hearing he said, "Secretary Hagel,
how can the administration continue to press ahead with transfers from Guantanamo at this time? Isn't this in conflict with your policy of stemming the
flow of foreign fighters?"

Hagel replied, "The intelligence community assessed that more than 90 percent of those detainees had not intended to or had in fact, we had not
evidence of returning to the battlefield."

It is expected that with a Republican Congress, it will be difficult for the Obama Admin to follow through on the closure of Guantanamo Bay.

Personally I hope they manage to succeed in that venture.

What are they supposed to do with these guys now?

If they bring them to the states, they are entitled. Send them back to their homeland and they will be icons.

My opinion of what is the smartest thing to do with them goes against my moral fibre but my moral fibre would never have allowed them to be detained in that fashion in the first place.

Personally I'd do it on a case by case basis...

Those held without charge with no evidence of terror links should be released and recompensed...

Any that clearly were threats should be charged...

However I agree that this should never have been the way to deal with things.

It only breeds more hate.

Some of these guys have been locked up over a decade with no evidence or trial...
That'd piss anyone off.

That is what I am afraid of. If they were not savages before, they are now regardless of the validity of the charges against them. They were treated like animals and now we are supposed to be shocked if they act like one?...

The circumstances under which these individuals were selected for incarceration was in many cases very suspect. The worst being reward money for ratting out your neighbor. I'm not a huge fan of the ACLU however I assume their info is at least as good or better then what we are getting from our government.

www.aclu.org...

86% turned in for bounty money
Youngest prisoner is 13 yo
Oldest 89 yo
Per our Government 92 % were never Al- Qaeda fighters.
798 held 600 released

The Rep " feel " many will return to combat although they allegedly were
never involved in armed conflict with the Coalition ( unwilling ) forces.

Some may ! I don't know about your thoughts, but if I was held I'd be exceedingly
PO'd . This is however an insignificant number compared to the 126.000 noncombatants WE killed in Afghanistan alone ( per military documents via Wiki leaks )
That number, in and of itself more then likely created a min of 300.000 family members who are not happy campers. I believe the Republicans manufactured fear is moronic and I'm a Rep although I don't vote party line.

Keep in mind that YOU may very well be labeled a person of interest > Domestic Terrorist as have ALL returning Combat Vets per those evil bastards at DHS.

Agree or not ,it is of little consequence ATS like many venues of this nature is simply
a place for us to vent. Pointless really.

They never should have been detained without trial in the first place.

Sorry the USA and Im afraid my own country is just going to have to suck it up and deal with the consequences of there mistake. If something bad happens as consequence then the politicians and heads of agency's responsible for this miscarriage of justice need to be held accountable.

In future if you detain someone GIVE THEM A BLOODY TRIAL!

And that is a consequence we in the west must man up and face.
