Abbort the new Harper Boy and this is nothing then fear mongering, i believe this is the same tactic that Hitler used to. Funny you dont see the Russians using it.

love the comment sections its hilarious.

Of course the Russian 'fleet' has a tug with them. Many Russian naval vessels are so dilapidated it is no surprise there is a tug boat as part of the 'show of strength".....

I am quite sure they are Russian Subs just like that Stealthy Sub in Sweden.

Putin, dead man walking. Only a matter of time before one of his cronie oligharcs under sanctions knocks him off. Or for that matter one honest Russian whos grown tired of dictatorship.

Last time they claimed that Assad was a dead man walking, it seems that this report has an effect on the minds of those in Australia which is not a surprise.

Russia has absolutely no credibility to send a military contingent to that part of the world especially at a time of peace and knowing Australia is now a non nuclear nation, a scientific mission yes, a friendly visit yes but a military exercise in waters that are essentially though international only really the domain of Australia and New Zealand absolutely NO!.

Putin want's a new cold war make no bones and he smells weakness in the west as well as gaining credibility at home so is stoking these old tensions, how many of his cabinet and advisors are like him former KGB sworn protectors of the old Soviet system and how many of them want to restore the soviet union - ALL OF THEM on the second point.

This exercise if part of his pallying up to China and offering them his military backing in the pacific while there navy is weak, this is a strong arm tactic supposed to project an image of strength and intimidation so this is the NEW COLD WAR and I have a feeling that in today's world the level of restraint exercised in the old one is no longer there so this is going to get HOT very soon unless that nasty little man putin back's down, you know his problem - little men and big car's.

I'm quite sure you're wrong. Four ships, the Varyag and the Marshal Shaposhnikov are two of them, along with the tug Fotiy Krylov, and the supply ship Boris Butoma. Not one of those is a submarine.

I think maybe he meant a supply boat for the submarines that are possibly local to those ships

Imo

There isn't really much to discuss about this. Russia has done this at previous G20s. They're just being show ponies to fluff up their ego. As soon as G20 is done they'll all turn around and sail home.

Hi Zaph,

I'm pretty sure they would escort the flotilla with perhaps 1 or 2 subs at least. I do have some background in sub escorts for ships in any exercise. Practice makes perfect and in this scenario I would be sure nothing regarding the visit is wasted by the Russians including the response times and countermeasures deployed by the aussies. Testing and recording and so forth. We all do it.

The Russian fleet passing through international waters by all accounts is small and I'm sure the aussie defence force will also benefit from tracking, locating and designing measures to counter a force close by our shores. Good practice.

All navies pass through waters close to aussie irregulary and in past times we frequented other international seas. No problem. If I was an aussie or Russian sailor at this time I'd be enjoying the experience and certainly learning from it.

Nothing to consider as threatening, sabre rattling or big noting ones self.

Kind regards, it's beer o'clock!

Bally.

lol so we got a few ruskie warships off our coast..and how many US subs do you think we have in the area shadowing them & protecting their vital interests? And how long do you think it would take these subs to sink the whole flotilla? You guys worry too much...

I don't believe it , but I found this:

www.liveleak.com...

Russian subs have a bigger 'sail' than that, (sail, new word for conning tower).

There are rumors that Putin is suffering from mental illness, that would explain that. And Putin is the front man of military, they do anything he wants to, they don't ask him if he is serious. Russia has been lately awfully interested in visiting neighboring and far away countries with military. Someone needs to tell Mr. Putin that its against the international laws to bring military inside foreign country's borders.

Apparently now Putin wants Australia.

And there are rumors that there is war starting in Ukraine today or tomorrow night. The east Ukraine is on verge of full-scale conflict. The next days will be interesting.

Exactly. It's just fear mongering, like the Russian plans to fly patrols over the Gulf of Mexico. This sort of thing went on almost daily during the Cold War, now it's some huge event when they bother to report on it.

It's true that this sort of thing was common during the Cold War. What's concerning about it is that it seems we're beginning to return to these Cold War tactics.

Because it's the best way for the Russian military to train. They fell apart for years, and are rebuilding now, which requires them moving around like this.

The USA has a lot more ships and even goes poking its nose around in the black sea so why is it OK for them to do it and not Russia.

I think one of the ships is a tug boar and one is painted white with a big red cross on it making it a hospital ship so any talk about an invasion is silly when Russia has nukes and missiles to deliver them with.

Abbot and his big gob has made himself look stupid in front of the world with his schoolboy comments and before going on about flight MH17 he needs to explain why the plane has 30mm bullet holes all over it.
