I stumbled upon this band while searching for backing tracks. I love me some progressive rock. Bands like Animals as Leaders, God Speed you Black emperor, Gojira, Tool.. If you like dark prog. rock, you might like this stuff.

If you know of some great prog rock/metal, please post it!

More on the softer side of prog rock, if you want a fluid band that just seems to tear of morsels of heaven piece by piece and plant them into wonderfully evocative music that also has enough breathing space to make a great jam backing track, this is who you need. (I play my Godin through a Marshall, and boy is it satisfying!)
The do get quite full on, but still listenable as if they have made it to the summit of Mt Everest just as the sun bursts through and soaks them in rays of electric orange. They also make a great band to put on when drifting off to sleep, or to fill the house on a lazy saturday arvo.

I guess its open for interpretation but I look for these qualities:

1) Longer songs (or “epics”)

2) Time changes (e.g., odd time signatures)

3) More complex, sophisticated instrumentation and compositions

4) Superior vocals

5) More complex conceptual ideas / Heightened, lyrical content

quite welcome. I was starting to take it personally that nobody had at least stared those two albums LOL

I mean it's not like I worked on them personally, but they really are great albums.

call it what you want. progressive/rock/jazz fusion/avant guard'......it does not get better than frank zappa.

he has a huge body of work spanning 30 years....its just amazing, complicated, insanely awesome stuff.

most people only know a few choice songs but his catalogue is deep.....

I personally would not put Katatonia under the genre of Prog Rock but in the end, who matters..good music is good music.. =)

Opeth: Faith in Others

Porcupine Tree: Sleep Together (live)

Anathema: Untouchable 1 and 2 (live)

Chelsea Wolfe: Feral Love

and just because I am a huge Emperor-Ihsahn fan...

Ihsahn with Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth: Unhealer

Yes it did! My dad forced the Moody Blues and Pink Floyd at a tender young age and I am forever addicted to the depth and emotion this genre provides.
On the heavier side of progrock, I can't believe no-ones mentioned Baroness?????
