Despite assurances from the Arizona Department of Education that passages in an honors biology text book describing abortion are legal, the governing body of the Gilbert Public Schools voted this week to remove the offending pages, reports AZ Central.

Board member Julie Smith claimed the passages in the textbook, ‘Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections,’ violates state law prohibiting the use of materials “that do not give preference, encouragement and support to childbirth and adoption as preferred options to elective abortion.”

Under a heading of “Contraception can prevent unwanted pregnancy,” the text states, “Complete abstinence (avoiding intercourse) is the only totally effective method of birth control.” It also describes how the “morning after pill” works as a contraception method.

The most effective way to get students to investigate and research a subject is to censor it.
I don't think this is the intention of the right wing conservative school board but knowing students [ex teacher] the way I do; that is exactly what will happen and non sanctioned texts, magazines and web pages will be investigated and the authorized text books will be ignored.
Way to go school officials....Idiots!!!

A classic case of ideology getting in the way of common sense!

Why would the School Board want to break a law?

No wonder they "voted" to get rid of the references.

References to mass murder are always queezy.

So they will research abortions? Or do you think they will seek more abortions? Not sure what you are getting at. Do you think it will encourage them to have sex? Believe me they're already doing that. I'm not trying to be disrespectful honest. I'm just not sure what you think teens will do if the information about abortions is removed.
Then of course I question what the school boards motive is because abortion although not an optimal form of birth control is still a legal option isn't it? I'd much rather see teens stop an unwanted pregnancy than have to end one. Thats not an easy decision for grown women to make never mind a teenager. Neither is giving a child up an easy decision. Birth control needs to be discussed as soon as a young person is old enough to procreate to avoid these heart breaking decisions. That being said I do support any woman's right to choose if an unwanted pregnancy occurs. Just saying it leads to lifetime regrets. My best friend had an abortion and she still mourns that child and its been over thirty years.

I'm pretty sure honors biology students will notice the subterfuge.

Talk about how to bring more attention to a subject you're trying to bury.

Simply show the fetal development through the nine months of carrying a baby to term, then show pictures of those same fetus being aborted up till the third trimester with partial birth abortion photos. That way you are showing both sides of the issue.

As a denizen of Arizona, let me be the first to apologize for the supremely stupid people who invariably get elected to office here... and let me also apologize for the supremely stupid people doing the electing... also, let me apologize for their presence in polite society, at all.

It's the heat, you see... renders brains right down to fat... I should know (picks nose and scratches ear with same finger/gesture).
