The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live CD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The product ships with several Internet applications, including web browser, IRC client, mail client and instant messenger, all pre-configured with security in mind and with all traffic anonymised. To achieve this, Incognito uses the Tor network to make Internet traffic very hard to trace.

Privacy for anyone anywhere

Tails is a live operating system, that you can start on almost any computer from a DVD, USB stick, or SD card. It aims at preserving your privacy and anonymity, and helps you to:

use the Internet anonymously and circumvent censorship;

all connections to the Internet are forced to go through the Tor network;

leave no trace on the computer you are using unless you ask it explicitly;

use state-of-the-art cryptographic tools to encrypt your files, emails and instant messaging.

Tails on a flash drive at the local library is fairly anonymous and safe. Those who know how to change their mac addresses and can hide their device specifics can use local WiFi hotspots with almost perfect anonymity.

It should be noted that the tools in TAILS can be installed onto any flavor or build of Linux one desires.

As the above poster eluded to. TOR is compromised - to one degree or another - through control of exit nodes. It's pot luck for the most part. VPN's are much more efficient.

for the average joe who fancies ensuring that their browsing of adult sites will never get discovered by an accidental typing of a url and something like youpr0n turns up higher than youtube for example its great but if its you versus the government then i'd say you're probably going to need to keep those eyes in the back of your head open and use multiple layers to ensure your privacy including looking for WPS enabled hotspots which generally can be cracked in a day or so or moving location each time you do something that will ping their radar
